I'd like to try it but I've searched high and low for the 2005.0 install booklet and can't find it anywhere. I've viewed the 2005.1 pdf on your site.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think he meant that it is out now so the suggestion was that you use it to build the new 2005.2 tarballs.

Also, to prevent further confusion with the numbering scheme, can we change it to something that does *not* mirror the Gentoo release numbering scheme? I know that this is simple and effective, but for the sake of preventing the altogether common association of Jackass being built from Gentoo releases b/c of the same scheme, I think we (or, you, in this case :P ) should consider another scheme.

i was hoping that he would give me his rationale. obviously, he thinks that the release of 2.3.6 is significant, so i thought i'd let him explain why Jackass! should be built upon this brand new library.

regarding numbers, i don't see that there's any reason to worry too much about the numbering scheme. people just need to understand that although Jackass! is based on Portage, its no longer built off of Gentoo installtion media, so there's no reason to assume that Jackass! media should have to be updated just because Gentoo installation media gets updated. Similarly, there's no reason to expect that Jackass! updates should have to wait for a Gentoo update to come along.

Jackass! is NOT going to shadow Gentoo. Jackass! releases will happen when they need to happen -- when there are significant changes to the components of the toolkit. That's not the way it is with Gentooo -- alot of Gentoo releases have come and gone but the Gentoo toolkit components haven't changed significantly for over a year. What's going to happen is that Jackass! will follow the portage tree, and its updates will occur on an as needed basis.

At any rate, I'd recommend that users stop trying to compare the version numbers between Gentoo and Jackass! There's not going to be a truly meaningful correlation between them.

Not to be a pain but it seems that all I would do is follow the GIH and substitue your stage 3 for gentoo's stage 3? I've done the GIH install on a number of machines so I am comfortable doing this is this is the case. Thanks.

FWIW, Support Questions should be asked in the Support Thread. This is a thread for people contributing to Jackass! Development, and I try to keep both threads on-topic..

Your installation question has already been answered in the Support Threads.

Have fun.

Ooooh, a new version of Jackass! I need to pay attention to the forums better.

I'll voice my opinion. First of all, whenever I've followed the Stage 1/3 installation guide, I deviate from the guide by switching to an ~x86 toolkit. To me, it seems that the stable branch is not necessarily rock stable when compared with the "unstable" branch. As updates to programs are released, they are for the most part designed to work with the newer versions of the programs that they depend on. That, and the reason of backports, leads me to think that it will be a good move to go with unstable.

if you check out some of the other threads, you'll find that that's pretty much the same argument that i came up with. so i think you'll be happy with the way the next release will be built.

Hey Bob, if you need CPU donors again I still have the same P4 box. I never did figure out the dyndns stuff as it doesn't really affect my other computing, but I could try to get it setup if the project goes ahead.

Hello bob, a question on future support for hardened gentoo in jackass, i know JA currently does not support hardened GCC but the ability to have a hardened JA for server use is appealing.

the problem is that hardened GCC is borked on x86. its an upstream problem.

in response to user emails and PMs:

the 2005.2 distribution files have already been picked up by 2 of the mirrors. the rest of the mirrors should have them within a few hours.

enjoy!

You guys don't have 2.3.6 in your portage tree!? Strange that it would be in ~amd64, but not ~x86.
And yes I know amd64 has never been supported. That's why I asked if/when you think you WOULD be releasing/supporting and amd64 version?

2.3.6 isn't ~amd64 either.

From /usr/portage/sys-libs/glibc/glibc-2.3.6.ebuild
Code:
