|
|
I see alot of masked packages in portage. Many are for things which I find odd, for example AWStats and reportmagic. Any particular reason why these aren't available in portage? I haven't tried unmasking them yet(which is another problem since I don't have an /etc/portage/packages.key-words file)
I know things are masked because they may not work properly but did I severely limit my options for serverside software by going with a sparq?
I am running a netra t1 and its headless so that I can replace my aging webserver with it. |

The reason packages are masked under sparc means that noone has tested the program under sparc and filed a bug report telling the results (success or failure). If it is hard masked it means it has been tested and known to not work. As far as the /etc/portage/package.keywords not existing it isn't supposed to untill you create it. I have never tried a sparc machine so I don't know how stable everything will be on it and how well everything compiles but you can test everything and see. Don't forget to file a bug report at bugs.gentoo.org with your results for each package. Good luck |

So my next question is how do I tell if something is hard masked or not?
I'll go out and try to find out on my own but if someone wants to respond while I am doing that, it would be cool too.
Thanks for the info capn! |
