Hello SPARC fans,
i am a SOLARIS guy and oscillating to LINUX on SPARC at the moment.
Please allow one question.
I never got it work to install a RAID system at installation time.
I could not mark the disks as a LVM volume. I also "labeled"
the disks bovere install, but they were not recogniced as lvm volumes.
In another tread someone told it is not possible because af a SUN disklabel.
I do not understand this.
In the bootblock resists SILO and SILO boots (whatever).
Can some one give me a light ?
thx

I have raid working on mine, but never tried LVM.
You might give that a try. It's not as flexible, but it does work. _________________ Gentoo systems.

you want to keep the boot disk (or boot partition) as simple as possible...i prefere to stick with ext2 for that one only...
but for everything else, i'm using reiserfs3 on lvm2...
i was using mdm before, but had one ugly experience with it (when it did not react on disk spindown in raid0 group) and i'm sticking with lvm2 since... |

what procedure have you followed?
and what kernel are you using? LVM works fine only with 2.6-kernels |

It is sometimes very simple as this is the first result on my google on the words: gentoo raid lvm
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_Install_on_Software_RAID_mirror_and_LVM2_on_top_of_RAID
i used this and it works... the only difference is that on a livecd for sparc not all the right stuff is included so youll have to work around that.
using this wiki i run my sparc64 (E250) on software raid _________________ SUN E250 2 x UltrasparcII@400Mhz 512MB RAM 6 x 9GB Kernel 2.6.8 (SMP)

Be wary of running reiserfs on SPARC. For some people, it runs fine and they have never had a problem with it at all. For others, it is extremely unstable and/or unusable. We only recommend ext2/3 and everything else is at your own peril (particularly xfs). |

given the above warning from weeve:
I run ext3 on my root disk that is mirrored using raid1 (if i'm correct as i always mixup raid0 and raid1) and a raid5 array of 4 disks (no spare) is with reiserfs that i have compiled as module to my kernel. (And i'm not using lvm.) But i also run 2.6.11 :
uname -a gives:
Linux ***** 2.6.11-gentoo-r8 #8 SMP Thu May 19 19:25:04 CEST 2005 sparc64 sun4u TI UltraSparc II (BlackBird) GNU/Linux
