How old is your laptop? I've known Grub from cd-rom to not boot well on older laptops. - Possibily it is something on the CD, perhaps try again, when I release 0.2 (new version of LiveCD) within the next few days (it is under comprehensive testing)

jastom |
Hello jastom, I am quite unsure, the status of it is an environment built, GCC 4.0.2-r1, Glibc-2.3.6-r1, binutils 2.16.91 - NO Graphical environment has been built yet, and the installer still needs some modifications, The first release will include 2 installers for testing, the GTK+ GLI and a more straight forward zenity script.
The new project name for the CD is "Maggie" so it is not confused with conrad.
So, expect to start seeing early alpha status of the CGP "Maggie" X-LiveCD probally within the next 2 weeks maybe sooner.

Currently there is only 1 known package that fails with GCC 4.0.2, that is QEMU (emulator)
On the ~x86 part of portage you won't see too many compile errors with stable CFLAGS _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

How do these flags look for GCC 4.0.2?
| Code: | CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
#
#Faster code
#
CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -mtune=pentium4 -msse -msse2"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -pipe"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -O2"
#CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -Os"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fomit-frame-pointer"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fstack-protector-all"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fno-ident"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fforce-addr"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -ftracer"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -falign-functions=4"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fprefetch-loop-arrays"
CFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -ftree-vectorize"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fvisibility-inlines-hidden"
#CXXFLAGS="${CXXFLAGS} -fvisibility=hidden"
#
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--sort-common" |
Also, I noticed that Tiger683 uses -fomit-frame-pointer and -momit-leaf-frame-pointer both. In GCC 3.4.4, using both of these yields the same results of using -momit-leaf-frame-pointer only. Did this change with GCC 4.0.2? _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

I tried a new burn of the disc, same problem. Then I tried a CD-RW, same problem. Finally another burn of the disc and no CRC errors. However, it always hung on ACPI. So I edit the grub options when I boot and set acpi=off, but then it still would freeze. I played with various options all day, and the only way I could get all the way to the command prompt is with the option ramdisk=16384.
Yet even then, I get segfault options when trying to untar portage. I've been working all day and night, and I'm still in the beginning steps of the install.
I went to the IRC room, and while people were in the room, I got no response. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I had all kinds of problems trying to boot from the LiveCD. I experimented, and eventually the only way I could get the LiveCD to boot was to change the grub options and put in acpi=off and ramdisk=16384.
I follow all the instructions with no problem, mount everything (proc included), chroot, and then I hit a brick wall.
I can't emerge anything. Emerge syslog-ng gives me an access denied error saying "open_wr /newroot/dev/tty1".
I exit out, and chroot back in, same problem. I reboot and start over, same problem.
Why is emerge looking for /newroot /dev/ is fine, and /dev/tty1 is there. But there is no /newroot anywhere I can find. Why is emerge looking for it? When I boot I briefly catch mention of /newroot being a tmpfs the LiveCD is supposed to set-up. I can't find it before or after chroot however. And after a chroot, it should be looking in /mnt/gentoo/dev, not /newroot/dev, right?
I'm really hoping I can find a solution to begin my install, but I've been checking the IRC room for 2 days and no one is ever there. Can someone please help me out? I want to pull my hair out. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I've been looking for help for a couple days now in the IRC rooms (#gentoo and #conrad-install) to no avail.
I can't emerge, so what I'm going to try and do is wget and manually download the source for syslog-ng, hotplug, coldplug, reiser4progs, libaal, etc and make them. Then I will download a kernel, apply patches manually, download the source for grub, and then hopefully I can boot to my hard drive and pray that emerge works then. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

I just tried the Conrad install CD on another computer to make sure it isn't my craptop. Same problem. I run the install-part1.sh, chroot, and then I can't emerge anything. It's still looking for /newroot, which doesn't exist.
I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the LiveCD, so I hope the new one comes out soon, and works. I've formatted all the boxes in the house, and none of them work, save for this last one now. My wife isn't too happy. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

EDIT
carpman:
ok, i made a patch which fixes the bug, can you please test it, so i can evtl. submit it upstream?
1) overlay, unpack it into /usr/local/portage or whatever is your overlay, ebuild has suffix -r99 Manifest and digest inclued:
nx-x11-1.4.0-gcc4_overlay.tar.bz2
2) this is the patch alone, in case someone wants to take a look before it gets confirmed (devs?):
nx-x11-1.4.0-gcc4.patch

In 9.3
| Code: | | # ebuild /usr/local/portage/sys-kernel/nitro-sources/nitro-sources-2.6.14-r2.ebuild |
needs to be changed to

I've made 4 different burns, and had the same problems. I used the same cdrom.
Then I tried the RR4 LiveCD. Mind you I don't have Reiser4 support this time, but I followed the same Conrad guide, but just used ext3 and the RR4 LiveCD and had no problems so far. I just built the kernel and grub, and I'm about to move on to install-part2.sh _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

Hello everyone.
I was away for the weekend, sorry for all the late respones - I'm doing my best
Tiger683 - I will test that patches overlay in the installation, thank
LiveCD Errors:
I will address this,
I can confirm that there is indeed a /newroot directory My assumption on this issue is ramdisk is 16xxx (not possitive on the exact value) well, the kernel compiled can only handle the maximum of 89xx, not positive on the exact value , Reason being, the 16,000 maximum ramdisk size caused me boot errors, for some reason - I can test again to confirm, but this is jus my experience.
NOTE: I will be using a new kernel configuration for LiveCD 0.2, but GRUB will remain over isolinux still, may cause some problems on laptops.
[i]The first LiveCD was the first release, it was quite experimental and ran a quite unstable kernel, but it works on probally 80% of Machines, the 20% that it wont boot on are probally laptops, I'm sure it boots better than 80% but it's just a guess.[/b]
Vipernicus, CFLAG Question
Advice: NO LDFLAGS, For best performance keep them stable
You won't get much (if any, probally a loss) performance gain - It is way more reliable, faster, and safer/more stable to use stable CFLAGS _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

I've been using those LDFLAGS for quite some time now. Have done several Stage 1's with them. Never had any noticable problems with them. What issues have you had with LDFLAGS? _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

Hi,
I followed the conrad install method and was quite happy with the performance and the way it worked until I installed kde and it freezes (actually, the entire system freezes, and there is no way of doing anything (Ctrl-C, tty switching, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace).
Has anyone experienced this previously or has a solution to this?
Thanks for the support
___
Edit:
I resorted to rebuilding kde-meta 3.5 rc1 (I originally used the stable branch kde-meta) ...
If by any chance you see no hope in this project, tell me now so I can start over with a gcc 3.4 (or whatever is 'stable') and reinstall --
Thanks |

LDFLAGS are strongly not reccomended for GCC 4.0, but for a stable compiler (3.4) I support them.

Hello, thanks for your interest in the CONRAD Install Method
I have not experienced this myself - Have you changed anything - such as make.conf farther than use flags? does anything else emerge besides kde-meta? Possibly try kde not meta
I see far hope in this project yet The "Lucky" install Method will be a boost _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

I saw that GCC recommend no LDFLAGS, but in the GCC 4 and 4.1 beta threads, several people have commented that they rebuilt their entire system with GCC 4.x with LDFLAGS with no problems. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |

really? On the GCC 4.0 testing tips it says NO LDFLAGS, in capital so that made me not want to try it _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

| Hi, I'm trying to install with the Conrad livecd, but it does not have the right module for my ethernet card. I need module forcedeth, but when I do modprobe forcedeth, it says FATAL:Module not found. Is there a way I can get it? Could I move over the module from the Gentoo live cd to the Conrad one and reburn the iso? Or am I just out of luck? Thanks for any help. |

I need module forcedeth, but when I do modprobe forcedeth, it says FATAL:Module not found. Is there a way I can get it? Could I move over the module from the Gentoo live cd to the Conrad one and reburn the iso? Or am I just out of luck? Thanks for any help. |
Hello, forcedeth - I will look into that for Conrad livecd 0.2 I am working on it now, nearly complete
To assure I get the right driver on the kernel, do you know the manufactuer of the card? I'm looking for it, every driver in 100 MB, 1000MB, and 10000M is a module
Sidenote:
Stay tuned for LiveCD 0.2 (sorry for delay) it should be released TOMMORROW (11/21/05) unless there are any errors, it may be a few hours late
Also, the CONRAD "Lucky" install method is in progress there are 2 complete bash scripts that do everything for you - They ask and do everything from network cards to partitioning to gcc 4.0 to the options for xorg 6.9_cvs and a desktop manager. (Conrad LUCKY Scripts written by "Brainiac_Ghost" edited/conrad-ized/additions by "Cheater1034")
The status of "Lucky" is quite far actually, the scripts are coming along nicely, I'm working on it next to the LiveCD 0.2 | "Lucky" is nearly done, slightly disfunctional still - But it should be done and the forum post should be up in the next week _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

really? On the GCC 4.0 testing tips it says NO LDFLAGS, in capital so that made me not want to try it |
I saw the same thing, but nxsty and a few others swear they've had no problems. _________________ Nihilism makes me smile. |
