Glad so many people are still enjoying my tutorial. I've been on a sort of vacation from all linux/programming-related activities for a while, so I haven't updated this recently.
Rest assured:
I will be updating this again soon (within a month or so hopefully?) with all-new tips and tricks for making your box run faster, harder, and farther. Away from you. In fear. Crying.
Anyway, keep posting the ideas and whatnot as I'll most likely try to fit them in as well.
amne: Glad you're keeping the N0085 in line.

you should also post a tutorial on how to do some crazy cool hardware h4x0ring for stupid speed!
like filling your harddrive with bacongrease, for reliabliliy AND speed,
or buying 35 led fans and putting them all over your computer AND monitor,
or cold cathode tubes -- becuase the more your computer case gives you a headache, the faster it goes,
and of course there is that cool clear sided "take me to your cool lan party" case that just screems "fast"
and if your video card isnt the size of 3 harddrives, requires its own powersupply, and is some crazy purple color that was invented at the time of conception, then your about to get fragged somethin' fierce!!!1!12
oh ya and heatsinks work better when they are the gayest colors on the planet.
liquid cooling is COMPLETELY necessary for that uber system.
INTEL sucks, and so does ATI,
what the hell is a 64 bit processor? -- I NEED IT!!!!
DISCLAIMER :
sorry the last few are the the blind mentality of my superior gaming friend -- it just gets to me how he always has an opinion rooted in some gamers magazine.
and also -- my computer for about 6 months was a pIII 500mhz, sitting in a shelf -- tacked to cork board (no case) and a monitor a friend gave me. It was one of the best performing computers (for its speed and config) that I have ever used -- rock solid until it completely borked. it borked finally because, back in its prime, my brother stuck a stick of ram in BACKWARDS, causeing some smoke. innevitably it was the burnt pin on that same stick of ram that came loose and cause a short -- killing the motherboard 6 years later!!!!!!
edit: oh ya and said computer had NO fans, only the big ass pIII heatsink and the heatsink on the geforce 2MX card... ran like a champ 24/7. oh ya and i rmoved the motherboard piezo buzzer, becuase it would beep like crazy at everything -- it got anoiying. |

Great post!
I am ashamed to admit that my kids computer has a clear side.
But it's only because I got it reeeeally cheap. I SWEAR!
ps. it's true about the gayest colors making your computer faster, it's the fairy magic. _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

Eh I like clear sided cases, my case also has a pulser in it, it reminded me of the Knight rider tv show so I had to have it. _________________ Ware wa mutekinari.

Mine has a clear side, purely cos my boss bought it as a gift.
What's wrong with that anyway? Was planning a Shuttle for my next machine with clear side. Or maybe that Dusk/Dawn nVidia case mod you can get - anyone seen that?
My addition to the above:
- I've always said this about servers, but applies to u83r l33t games machines too: "It's gotta SOUND fast - like a car with a big exhaust - stick loadsa whining fans in it"
- Water cooling system has to have an EXTERNAL water talk, almost the size of the actual machine, sittin next to it. With neon lights. And real fish (It's kinetics - the fish move, ceating miniscule amounts of static that react with the earthing of the power supply for that extra tiny bit of regulated voltage to the processor). Even better - electric eels. You will need a copper and a steel rod, one either end of the tank, and connected to the + and - of the 5v rail on the PSU.
- A bit about RAID. Two SATA harddisks strapped together so TWO buses can read the data at the same time, as we all know, speeds up disk reading. For SUPER-STOOPID reading speed, there's a rare kernel and matching bios update which will allow up to TWELVE DISKS in RAID. Blistering. _________________ Hysteriagaming.co.uk is now DOT COM! Actually the Water Cooling system, must use the sweat of God's balls... Ever seen Jurassic Park? I want my glass of water to vibrate when I turn on the machine. _________________ Viper-Sources Maintainer || nesl247 Projects || vipernicus.org blog |

No, you don't. You can't really trust all those metal things made by companies that hide their blueprints - hence clear side was invented. With clear side you always know what is the inside up to. |

clear side cases let you get a very healthy dosis of EM radiation.
If you stay close to it, you do not need to take a sun bath or go to a tanning salon.

My box has no sides, I bet that is more personalized than any omgubereverracin'kixassbox. No sides at all, and a bended piece of paper holds cdrw drive to avoid misterius movements. The fd drive has no front and the dusty particles have parties into the case (if you can call that a case).
I like it that way, because I can plug and unplug thousands of things a day, and this way I dont need silly this like a galactic teletubbie green sink or a plutonium powered refrigeration system. Its so practical, has been that way for years, thru all updates I made. I took the sides out bored of having to put and remove them even 5 or 6 times each day. Now, they rest in the basement, with a lot of non-usefull stuff that someday I will forge to make a big space ship. :^P |

Could you please make the warning on the top of the original post stand out more? I wanted to give my system extra performance boost, but now it is reduced to only being able to cat and ls.
I followed this guide during installation/setup of my system, and now it is unusable. I got to the bottom of the post where it says 'never try, blah blah' in big letters only aftyer I finished doing most of the install/setup.
