i read the following on http://linuxdc.sourceforge.net/ :

Quote:
Some Gentoo enthusiasts, including Karl Trygve Kalleberg, is again sniffing at making a Gentoo port to the Dreamcast.

this would be soooooooooo sweet :)
i've even rushed to get the parts needed to build a rs232 interface for my Dreamcast :P

I used to run linux on my dreamcast, but with out a bba it was kind of useless for me + it sucked having to use it on a TV, I suggest getting a VGA adaptor if you haven't already. Now I just use the DC for emulating NES games :D

I bought one of those programmers cables for mine (I think I only paid $50 for the cable + a vga box). I setup a cross compiler on my Linux system and it was pretty cool to be able to upload my own little programs into memory and run them off the dreamcast. When I last did it, the tools were pretty ghetto, I wonder if they got any better....

rs232 = serial or comport or /dev/ttyS0 , however you want to call it

wow.. [digging dreamcast out of the dust]...[throwing ps2 other side of room] :-P

Nah, I would rather port Gentoo over to ps2 since I have broadband for it.
Is it expensive to run linux on DC?

can be done .. ps2 has the advantage of having its own standard harddisc (from the linuxkit) , but some ppl are playing with IDE on DC aswell.. check http://www.electronsrus.com/

i've seen prices of about 99$ for a dreamcast lan adapter (which is basically a rtl8139 in a weird package 8O ) and this IDE interface from above would be about the same , if it ever gets produced at all..
still , every DC comes with a modem by default and there is a modem driver available (sorta) http://www.boob.co.uk/files/modem/dcmodem11.zip , and you can do modem -> modem with a line simulator http://www.jagshouse.com/modem.html
and of course replacing the IDE with a gentooDC livecd ;)

I bought my dreamcast with spare change, seriously I got it for $30 which I had from change in a jar. Hit up ebay for the broadband adapter.

Hey, running Gentoo on my DC is something I always wanted to do but last time I checked, all I found were broken links. Anybody got some links of places where I can get some actual info, and preferably some downloadable stuff to try? linuxdc.sourceforge.net is just a stupid page with outdated news and no files at all in the project's release directory.

BTW if you are looking for dev stuff Lik-Sang has serial cables and ps2 keyboard/mouse adapters. I got both from them and they work very well, I can do indie dev programming with KallistiOS (which kicks serious ass, I recommend anyone with a dreamcast and C/C++ programming skills to try it).
