Hello All!

I’m having a bit of trouble getting a Davicom DM9102 Ethernet card to work with the 2005.1 live CD. Here are the details:

I’m running on a Sun Ultra 5 Sparcstation (UltraSPARC-Iii 360MHz) with 512 MB of memory. OpenBoot version is 3.31

Booted the Gentoo Sparc64 Universal CD (Same behavior is observed if I boot the Minimal CD)

Gentoo SPARC Linux
Version 2005.1

Initially (i.e. as soon as I get a command prompt) an lsmod shows dmfe module loaded with a Used count of 1

After 12 sets of the following messages:

Eth0: Tx timeout – resetting
SABRE0: PCI SERR signal asserted.
SABRE0: PCI bus error, PCI_STATUS[caa0]

An lsmod shows the dmfe module (still) loaded, but with a Used count of 0

While the above messages are being displayed, I noticed that the lights (for the port into which the system is connected) on my switch are going out and then coming back on again. Once the errors stop (and the Used count goes to 0), the lights remain on.

I can easily recreate the situation by doing an rmmod dmfe followed by a modprobe dmfe.

I pretty certain that all of the hardware is OK as this device and network connection works fine with Solaris 9, which is still installed and operational on the hard disk.

A lspci shows:

0000:02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Davicom Semiconductor, Inc. 21x4x Dec-Tulip compatible 10/100 Ethernet (rev 31).

An inspection of /var/log/messages shows:
dmfe: Davicom DM9xxx net driver, version 1.36.4 (2002-01-17)
eth0: Davicom DM9102 at pci02:01.0, 00:80:ad:80:f1:2a, irq 7163136

During boot, I see the following:

* Coldplugging pci devices
. . . can’t load module tulip
Missing kernel or user mode driver tulip

The above two lines appear 8 times.

I did notice that the tulip.o file is not in the kernel/drivers/net directory (as the dmfe.o file is), but is in its own subdirectory (kernel/drivers/net/tulip/).

Any Ideas?

Thanks for your time!

Use the tulip driver, the dmfe driver doesn't work well on sparc.

My bad for lack of completeness... modprobe tulip and net-setup the interface.
Coldplug should pick it up, it's quite odd it doesn't.

Thanks for the reply, Gustavo!

modprobe tulip

gives a

/lib/modules/2.4.31-sparc/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.0: init_module: No such device

Since the dmfe module is still loaded, I did a

rmmod dmfe (no errors displayed)

modprobe tulip

no errors are initially displayed (i.e. I get a command prompt right away) but after several seconds then a steady stream of the following:

eth0: (#####) System Error occurred (1)

where ##### is replaced with an ever increasing number, presumably a counter.

The above messages are coming out so fast, that a power-cycle is required to recover.

I've been digging around and am wondering if this could be something that needs to the "tweeked" in the OpenBoot environment or a kernel option passed at boot time, remembering that this adapter works without a problem under Solaris 9.

Thoughts?

It is interesting that the PCI ethernet is assigned to eth0 and the on-board ethernet (hme based) winds up on eth1.

BTW, eth1 comes up and works just fine.

Thanks for your time!
