Seems like I'm the only one who is ignornant of the wonderfulness of these fonts
Can you maybe make a screenshot of the fonts in action? Preferably in their intended use (eg, for X-terms, etc) maybe?
Thanks:) |

Let's just see Freetype 2.1.4 (free font hinter) in Epiphany 0.5.0 on OSNEWS.

Hrmmm the shot looks a bit blurry here - the fonts a very shape here. But I still need to do a bit of tinkering to find the optimal settings. |

I'm also running Freetype 1.2.4 - as of last night. Now that we have a nice shot, let me name a couple of things I think need fixing:
(In the "Why Linux is Not..." box)
- "The Lenghty": the "e"s are too close to "h" and "L". This seems to be a problem with the "e" in general.
- "yourself": too much space between "y" and "o", and not enough between "o" and "u".
- bold "e"s look too heavy.
And so on and so forth. Nice fonts are certainly here, but perfection isn't. Having 4 versions of 4 programs, 5+ configuration files, 3+ font types and more isn't helping the situation. But things are getting better. _________________ Excelsior! |

My fonts looked similar to Lovechilds until I turned back on font autohinting which has been further refined in the latest Freetype version 2.1.4. This has given me a font which I'm pretty much happy with.
I think these fonts have been designed with the new freetype without the bytecode interpreter on.
I don't have any webspace however maybe someone who has similar settings to mine can put some piccies up of this alternative way of rendering the font? |

I snagged the beta fonts during the short time that they were available. For the last several weeks, I've been checking the site every day for the final release. They must have showed up while I was at work today. Thanks for the heads up!
Gotta walk the dogs first, but I'll be replacing the betas shortly. |

What's really interesting for all the GNUs in you is that these fonts are perhaps the first open-source ones... That's what makes these fonts special
You can see their generous copyright at http://www.gnome.org/fonts/
It is some kind of a truly generous donation to the Gnome project by Bitstream. |

Here is an ebuild:
EDIT: I've removed the ebuild code because an updated version is on bugzilla.
I've submitted it as bug #19446.

I take it these fonts are more than just a look? Becuase they look a lot like Verdana... which isnt anything special; Just a normal font. What am I missing? _________________ a.k.a port001

They're sorta-GPLed fonts, as opposed to the MS core fonts which are just OK to redistribute, not modify. And even then, only as unmodified EXE files. |

Apps (Galeon 1.3.3, Gaim 0.61, Gedit 2.2.1) using Vera fonts.
Latest freetype.
Bytecode.

offtopic: should I put thumbnail with link to full screenshot or just the full screenshot like I did now in my future posts?
Edit:
Here is a screenshot with autohinter:

Yinchie: That looks nice, is that Bytecode or Autohinter? Or something else?

Here's an interesting question destined to make me look like a fool... I've seen many people post ebuilds in the forums... How do I make use of them? |

Bytecode if i am right, I have cjk in my USE flags.
Code: |
10 Apr 2003; foser <foser@gentoo.org> freetype-2.1.4.ebuild :
Changed bytecode to be only disabled when prebuilt in USE
09 Apr 2003; foser <foser@gentoo.org> freetype-2.1.4.ebuild :
New version, disabled smooth patch, cause it doesn't seem to work
Disabled bytcode interpreter for anything but cjk use flag, using
the autohinter instead as suggested by the freetype team.
Added zlib use flag

Yinchie: Yes, that should enable Bytecode, I agree.
metalhedd: How did you get 700+ posts? The Gimp is v1.3, it comes in technicolor. _________________ Excelsior! |

harsh dude, harsh... I obviously got 700+ Posts because I'm such a 1337 hAx0R.
lol, I just never use the gimp.. Only when absolutely necessary... it's really nice, but confuses the piss out of my sometimes, so i try to avoid it.
as for the ebuild thing.. I dunno... of all the ebuilds that I've seen posted here, There's never been one I've felt the need to try... and I've never seen any documentation on how to add your own ebuilds. I guess just put it in a file with the correct name in the correct category? |

How you came to be l33t is beyond my knowledge.
Emerge the gimp-1.3, the masked one.
select and paste the ebuilds into favorite editor.
save as name-version.ebuild into /usr/local/portage/right-directory
then it's just emerge name-of-ebuild
sortof... |

You're lucky i'm such an easy going guy or I would have taken offense to that
we're all l33t in our own ways, Mine just doesn't happen to portage or the gimp... I've successfully configured a whole lot of stuff on several different systems in my 1 year with gentoo... I can practically write an XF86Config from scratch.. now that's l33t
but serisously, thank you for your kind words of encouragement. |
