I was able to install 1.4 rc4 livecd with stage 3 tarball. Everything was good, including the network (woohoo). Upon reboot, no network, not eth0.
/lib/modules/*/kernel/drivers/net contains one file, dummy.o
dmesg says I am using the Intel 82559 w/ ifchip i82555
I think I missed the first part of the x86 installation #21, modifying the /etc/modules.autoload
How do I restore my network module? Where from? How do I make it sticky on reboot?
Thanks in advance,

BTW- I booted up tonight to try again, and everything works. This stuff is still black magic to me, hopefully I'll be enlightened soon. _________________ I'm just a java guy... |

on track to be the longest running single user thread
So, my network dies at some point after reboot. I just keep rebooting, then working some more with some package emerges.
What am I missing? What information can I provide that would help diagnose the problem? _________________ I'm just a java guy... |

lspci will give a list of stuff sitting on the PCI bus
lsmod will give a list of the modules you currently have loaded
modprobe <module name> will load a module with dependency checking
ifconfig will give a list of your interfaces (eg: eth0)
How exactly does the network die, check the output of ifconfig to see if it is still configured correctly.
I'm not sure how much help I was, but I just thought I'd thwart your efforts in creating the longest single user thread .
Good luck. |

Well, it's still working.
BTW- lsmod shows no modules, and I cannot find lspci anywhere on the drive.
If a module showed on lsmod, I could just add that network module to the modules.autoload right?
Until it happens again, I guess I'll just 'hang tough' like the new kids. _________________ I'm just a java guy... |

If you don't see anything in lsmod and you can still use your network, I'm guessing you have network support compiled directly into your kernel. In that case you wouldn't need to do anything with modules.autoload. |
