I'm having problems configuring postfix. I've tried the desktop configuration guide and the documentation that came with postfix, but had no luck. I'm able to send emails but when I use an external mailer, mail.wsu.edu, I get this error message:
Code:

##.###.##.## does not like recipient.
Remote host said: 554 <felipea@####.#####.net>: Relay access denied
Giving up on ##.###.##.##

I'm using www.no-ip.com as my DNS. But, I suspect that setting the MX record is not a problem, because everything routes to my IP fine.

I've spent days reading docs and playing around with the config files. This is my current /etc/postfix/main.cf file:
Code:
       PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
    xxgdb $daemon_directory/$process_name $process_id & sleep 5

alias_database = hash:/etc/mail/aliases
 alias_maps =hash:/etc/mail/aliases
 command_directory = /usr/sbin
 daemon_directory =/usr/lib/postfix debug_peer_level = 2
 debugger_command =
default_destination_concurrency_limit = 10
 home_mailbox = .maildir/
inet_interfaces = all
local_destination_concurrency_limit = 2
mail_owner =postfix
mailq_path = /usr/bin/mailq
manpage_directory = /usr/share/man
mydestination =$myhostname. localhost.$mydomain mail.$mydomain
mydomain =#####.net
myhostname = #####.#####.net
newaliases_path =/usr/bin/newaliases
queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix
readme_directory= /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.0.3
sample_directory = /etc/postfix/sample
sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail
setgid_group = postdrop
unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 450

I'd appreciate any help or pointers. It seems like, from searching through the forums, that many gentoo users have the same problem, even after following the desktop guide.

First, please do us a favor -- do this:

Code:

cat /etc/postfix/main.cf | grep -v ^# | sort

Then, edit your post and replace that config file with the output; the comments make it almost impossible to sift through and see what you've changed. Thanks!

Possibly thats not what you want to hear, but there is a very good (and extremely active) maillinglist

Try adding smtpd_recipient_restrictions to main.cf

Code:

smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated,
                               permit_auth_destination,
                               permit_mynetworks,
                               check_relay_domains,
                               reject

I can't see how to support this without either typing a huge post or asking you some questions, but first a simple answer -- the reason your mail is being rejected by mail.wsu.edu is that your university's server admin is halfway competent and is not allowing SMTP relay at least from outside campus, maybe at all.

That said, here are the questions:
1. Are you wanting your box to send mail, or do you intend to use another outgoing server?
2. Are you running your own private network?
3. Are there other machines trying to use this box in question (your own, I presume) as a mail server?

I was able to solve the problem by running etc-update and using the -3 options. I replaced most of my config files, except for the main.cf and some other ones I had already configed previously. For some reason it fixed my problem. Thanks everyone for all your help
