I have a Gateway with a P4 1.4Ghz and 128MB of PC800 RDRAM, does anyone know if I buy another 512MB (2X256MB) PC800 RDRAM should I be able to just plug it in and use it? and will it make compiling much faster?
Thanks |

I would recommend making sure your motherboard can take a 512MB stick if you haven't already checked. You can check your documentation or perhaps Gateway's site.
As far as speed improvement goes I can only say that in going from 256MB to 512MB, I saw dramatic improvement in performance across the board. I rarely see my machine dip into swap now.

After installing it I'd run memtest86 just to make sure there aren't any errors.

You're correct. I had SDRAM on the brain |

*warning: not fool prove information ahead*
actually that is not quite right. the 16bit rdram modules have to be used in pairs. lately there are 32bit versions (which of course need a different mobo type) which can be put in as a single. but due to the fact there is a 1.4ghz p4 on it - it is most likely a 16 bit type.. but then again.. did they really delivered these things with 2 x 64 mb modules? oh my goodness |
