How does 2005.0 and 2005.1 profiles differ on sparc64?
I noticed the README file on minicd iso 2005.1 in the sparc64 2005.1 profile saying something about development version.
Is the distro release model anyhow compareable to Debian?
If it is compareable then is the "stable" version 2005.0?
Does 2005.0 get security updates?
sorry for asking maybe too soon before doing some research first.
btw: had problem with glibc emerge in profile 2005.1 (step 6.d (last command) from http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-sparc.xml?style=printable&full=1 ) ld was not able to link the lib and there was hint about not being compiled with -fPIC

We usually keep the last two profiles alive, which as of this writing are 2005.0 and 2005.1.
Security-wise all the non-deprecated profiles are supported and get updates at the exact same time.
Even the deprecated ones get them unless there's some lock conflict (usually just core stuff like gcc or glibc). _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

Thanks.
Another question arose. Does anybody know which is the prefered/"supported" way to stay updated on the question of "deprecated profiles" or list of "non-deprecated profiles"? (sparc64), Any app or web page, announcements mailng list, etc? |

Portage will warn you when you're on a deprecated profile and how to upgrade.
Usually for the experimental profiles there's a big fat README file in it's directory that warns you.
For the most part switching to a new profile for us SPARC isn't painful for now, otherwise we'd announce the upgrade procedure in the mailing list. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias
