What is the all around best PSX emulator, one with good game play, little lag, good video and if possible (but not as important...) good sound emulation? _________________ http://www.geekbin.net |

epsxe is currently the only playstation emulator in portage to my knowledge. It's also the best one available. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

I think there's one called PCSX as well, but i haven't tried it. I found epsxe to be really accurate and smooth, but the fact that it is impossible to get a second controller working, even with the padjoy plugin, makes it somewhat useless to me. |

ah...the burning questions ^^
I'd would say PCSX, just because you can compile it from source. ePSXe was not intended at first for use with Linux, and in my opinion, ePSXe Linux is buggy as hell _________________ NGemu.com - Next Generation Emulation

Me and a freind of mine have played Ehrgeiz with two controllers. It works fine. Also, epsxe linux works fine. _________________ CPU: 3800+ X2 (2.5Ghz)

Code: | cdrdao read-cd --read-raw --datafile game.bin --device ATAPI:0,0,0 --driver generic-mmc-raw game.toc |
That worked for me in the past. It's been a while since I tried but I don't see why it would be any different now. |

Anybody been able to get an emulator working with analog input? This is the one thing keeping me from playing my PSX games, it is terribly terribly frustrating. |

epsxe works great for me under linux.
Instead of wasting cds i use simply the plain iso files, lying on the Server here... But they are all ripped years ago with nero!
For the second Gamepad i use this http://interreality.org/~tetron/technology/joy2key/ |

Or did it just seem to work automatically for you? I am using a Logitech Rumblepad 2, the sticks register fine in other games but never worked with any PSX emulator. |

It has been ported to linux recently, unfortunately I don't have a linux box right now.
Can anyone try it?

Emulators are not illegal as long ad they wre developed correctly. Using ROMs you have the rights to use is not illegal (it's shaky but probably OK to use a ROM if you bought the original CD--not strictly legal probably but you're fairly safe). Going to bittorrent and downloading a ROM image is pretty clearly not legal, of course... |

i believe emulation falls under "fair use", providing you have the original media, be it a nes cartridge, or a psx cd. _________________

Not necessarily true. Emulators are under "fair use", providing they are cleanly reverse engineered using the "Chinese Wall" technique (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clean_room_design). However, ripping of the ROMs may or may not be legal; it depends on how the data is stored. For example, ripping a PS2 game off a DVD would violate the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA), since the DMCA specifies that it is illegal to bypass an "encrypted" security measure, even if the encryption is crappy, as in the case of the CSS encryption used on DVDs. Yes, it is even illegal if you own the DVD and just want to make a backup copy.
DMCA has beaten out "fair use" in the recent past, which is a travesty.
Course, this is the same reason there is no legal free DVD player for linux (can buy a license of PowerDVD for linux and you're all set though). Same reason it is illegal to rip a movie off a DVD you own so you can watch it on, say, a PSP. Nope, legally, you need to buy both the DVD and the little PSP disc. Wicked stupid anti-consumer laws...
