Hi All

First my SunBlade 150 booted just fine. I Changed some kernel options (from what I remember it was only audio stuff), but now it doesn't boot anymore.
Here is the boot message:
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda3" or 03:03
Please append a correct "root=" option
Kernel panic: VFS Unable to mount rootfs on 03:03
   Press L1-A to return to the boot prom
As far as I know I've ext3 compiled in the kernel
Furthermore L1-A, and I assume that it is the same as [STOP]-a doesn't work at this stage too, so I've to turn my computer off.

Just to make this post more complete, here is my silo.conf file:
Code:
partition = 1
root = /dev/hda3
timout 150

image /boot/kernel-2.4.31-sparc-r1
      label = Kernel
And a snippet of /etv/fstab:
Code:

/dev/hda1      /boot     ext2   noauto,noatime   1 1
/dev/hda3      /         ext3   noatime          0 0

Any suggestion why it won't boot ?

Luca

So the previous kernel works? Diff the .config files . . .

Just a curiosity - Do you use Sun label on your disk? Perhaps you should
not use /dev/hda3 as mount point. It points to whole disk, not just one part of it.
-correct me if I'm wrong-
Your partition table could / should / might / anything-like-that look like:
Code:

/dev/hda1 /boot ...
(/dev/hda2 <swap>)
/dev/hda4 / ...

And you told, you use ext3, but in fstab, you have specified ext2.
Any help?

I don't have the previous .config file.... sounds stupid, but I didn't expect anything to break. Or does make menuconfig keep the old config somewhere ?

Emphii: I created the partitions with fdisk, so they are not Sun-labels!

Ok Luca. =) Hmm. I have U10, which -if I understood right- has to have Sun labeled
disks. I have 40GB disk in it, and I configured it first with solaris installation disk and
then got back to Gentoo and fdisk with it.
If you take a look to disk parameters, you have just now, you might get the same
by typing them in.

My disk is ST340810A and it have parameters: 16 heads, 255 sectors, 19156 cylinders.
It gives me 39078240 blocks to /dev/hda3 (Whole disk).

But - if this is not the issue, please ignore me. =)

Well, you might have a point here, but the thing that keeps me standing is that it has worked before. I'm now trying to recompile my kernel using the config file of the liveCD (that was how I started before).

How did you calculated this number 39078240 blocks ?

Also the /etc/fstab:
Code:

# <fs>         <mountpoint>   <type>      <opts>      <dump/pass>
/dev/hda1      /      ext3      noatime      0 1
/dev/hda2      none      swap      sw      0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0   /mnt/cdrom   iso9660      noauto,ro   0 0
/dev/fd0      /mnt/floppy   auto      noauto      0 0
proc         /proc      proc      defaults   0 0
shm         /dev/shm   tmpfs      nodev,nosuid,noexec   0 0

Also a copy of my /etc/silo.conf
Code:

partition = 1
root = /dev/hda1
# default = "Linux"
timeout = 60
image="/boot/kernel-2.4.31-gentoo-r1"
   label="Linux"
   append="initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.31-gentoo-r1 root=/dev/hda1 init=/linuxrc"

I try to keep my install's as simple as possible, it's the KISS principle and it generally works. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other Blade 150 questions.
