it's still not working for me either... it's correctly emerging 2.2.4, my /etc/portage/package.* files are all configured correctly, i've tried a half dozen times and i'm still getting normal gimp.

if anyone wants to post a step by step guide with all the corrected echos and such i'd appreciate it.

@Caffeinebot and amphibious:

Gimp and gimpshop are not very different. The main difference between them are the locations of the Gimp functions.

eg. Open an image and click on 'Image' in the window where the picture is in. If you see 'Rotate Canvas' there, you have gimpshop.

If you still do not have it, please don't forget the 'gimpshop' USE flags when you emerge it.

The step-by-step guide is here.

Maybe it was temporary, it worked for me just a minute ago.

I understand they are functionally the same, just moving around menus and such... and that's not the case for me. I'm getting someting that is exactly the same as what I pre-gimpshop.

Please post the outputs of the following commands:
Code:
cat /etc/portage/package.keywords | grep gimp

Code:
cat /etc/portage/package.use | grep gimp

Code:
cat /etc/make.conf | grep OVERLAY

I don't know why, but when I read GimpShop, I thought it would look more like this.

I guess I should have read more about it first :P

You can modify all windows from Gimp see the little menu "Add a Tab" you can drag'n'drop them in the position you like.

I don't think that's completely true...can't the "look and feel" of an application be copyrighted?

Yes, I believe the look can be copyrighted, but I think even the look of gimpshop still differs very much from the original.

Another question would be, if Adobe did copyright the look of Photoshop. Probably only some functions or filters, if any. It is only a piece of code they sell, they probably did not copyright anything (except for the name), as the code will never be released and you only see the binaries.

So what happened to gimpshop? The ebuild doesn't work anymore because it can't find the sources, is gimpshop dead? I was hoping it would become a real addition to portage..

Sorry for being newbie, but I got to the point:
Code:

>>> emerge (2 of 2) media-gfx/gimpshop-2.2.4 to /
!!! No package manifest found: /usr/portage/media-gfx/gimpshop/Manifest

what's going on??

Yea, i figured I had to make a directory for the ebuild.

Copy the *.ebuild into /usr/portage/media-gfx/gimpshop
Copy all the rest of the patches into /usr/portage/media-gfx/gimpshop/files
Do a digest
Copy the bz2 to /usr/portage/distfiles

It worked, but it would help if the original post coulda said all that, instead of "ebuild, works, get!!"

Yes, there should be an official. But before that happens, I will provide a fresh ebuild of the latest version, 2.2.8.

I will try to do an idiot proof explanation how it should work for all people, even unexperienced. That doesn't mean your an idiot if you don't manage ;-). Just ask if you have problems.

Do the following as root:
Code:
mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/gimp/files
cd /usr/local/portage/media-gfx/gimp/
wget http://n.ethz.ch/student/homartin/download/gimpshop/gimp-2.2.8-r1.ebuild
cd files
wget http://n.ethz.ch/student/homartin/download/gimpshop/gimp-2.2.8-configure-fix.patch
wget http://n.ethz.ch/student/homartin/download/gimpshop/gimp-2.2.8-restart-marker.patch
wget http://n.ethz.ch/student/homartin/download/gimpshop/gimpshop-2.2.8.patch
wget http://n.ethz.ch/student/homartin/download/gimpshop/ltmain_sh-1.5.0-fix-relink.patch
ebuild ../gimp-2.2.8-r1.ebuild digest
mkdir /etc/portage
echo media-gfx/gimp gimpshop >> /etc/portage/package.use
emerge gimp

The patch "gimpshop-2.2.8.patch" is rejected outright.
Trying to apply it by hand it seems this is a "reverse" patch....all files fail.

Sorry to hear that. But as it works for me (on three computers) and for at least one other guy who private messaged me, I guess the problem is related to something else.

You could post error messages...

Ever heard of CherryOS or IMBlaze?

Nope. Are people happy about it?

Besides making a watch look like a rolex doesnt make it a rolex. It makes it a cheap knock off. GIMP is far inferior to PSD and simply making it "look" like it doesnt bring it any closer to functioning just as well. Its a stupid idea and a waste of time unless you are actually going to code GIMP to function identically...

it isnt. gimp is much easier to use

Works here as well. Thanks for the ebuild and good luck in making the official build :)

Will any of the devs ever look into moving this into portage? Or would that cause an outrage in the community to have that choice?
