Hi,

I'm not having much luck getting gentoo configured.
I downloaded and installed kde3 & gnome 1.4
I have a Audigy sound card. I followed the instructions to configure it, but I get no sound when I boot. The aplay command works and I hear pop.wav

To date I do not have the folllowing working.

1. cd/rw tdk
2. kernel not configured right, getting can't locate nsl_iso8859 errors
3. root works, user frocco cannot login using su
4. need to create a boot disk, as I installed RH and need to add gentoo to it's grub

Thanks
Frank

This has been answered, as of this posting, 4,398,559 times in the archives. Please search for "su AND root" in the search page. Or, check the FAQ on gentoo.org, where this question is also answered.

To be able to su, the user has to be added to the wheel group.

Is your kernel compiled with support for cdrw?

cheers,

Hi,

Not sure, where would I look?
I add myself to the wheel group. thanks
I don't really want to give up on gentoo, I hope I can get these things ironed out.

Could I use the config file in redhat and overwrite the gentoo one and recompile the kernel?

Regards,

Frank

This would most likely not work.

The first thing you're going to need to do is emable SCSI Emulation in the kernel (I think you can choose to have it part of the kernel OR loaded as a module). After that, I forget what you need to do. But that's a start. Do a search on this site or at linuxnewbie.org or, I'll bet you could find it simply using GOOGLE.
In any case... you NEED to enable SCSI Emulation (under SCSI) in your kernel.

For the Audigy card, you'll be better off installing ALSA if you haven't already. Did you do that? I can't tell from your post. Oh wait, you're trying aplay -- that says to me you are using ALSA. Go to the ALSA website and see if someone at their irc channel or mail list can help you with that. They're pretty helpful.
Or go to the emu10k1 site at sourceforge. That driver seems to be working better and better with the Audigy (I had an audigy for a while. Not anymore.) Also, there's the Open Sound System -- you can install the trial version of their driver and, if you like it, pay a nominal fee to get the permanent license for it. They're at www.opensound.com.
Hope that helps a little bit.

thanks, i'll change my kernel to that setting.
I selected Soundblaster emu10k1 and microsoft sound system in the kernel. I'm wondering if there is a conflict.

I installed RH 7.3 and modified it's grub to include gentoo.
I think i'll change the splashimage as I like gentoo's better.
What do you think about Slackware 8.1?

Frank

You can use the Gentoo install CD as a really big boot floppy.
