I am the unfortunate owner of a hp4200 color scanner. Default SANE does not support this scanner, but there is a project for building a backend here but that patch is not inculded int he ebuild. I have my own build of this currently, and i only run the 1.0.8 of xsane, but for the 3rd time i have had to rebuild this thing by hand bcs i forgot, and portage upgraded me to 1.0.9 :/

Anyone feel like incorporating this ?

Should i just mail the sane ebuild maintainer directly ?

how can i maintain my older out of date ebuild ?

I think the best thing you can do is submit a bug / feature enhancement request at https://bugs.gentoo.org

As long as the patch doesn't effect users of other models of hardware, I doubt the package maintainer would have too much of a problem adding it to the ebuild. You can also make use of the portage overlay functionality to keep your ebuild from getting blow away during emerge sync operations (see /etc/make.conf).

Hope that helps...
