My wonderful new problem is described at the bottom of the thread.
As it turns out, the fstab problem wasn't related to my error as much as it was nano getting overzealous about forcing carriage returns. All is better now that I emerged vim and can add the opts on the same line as the rest of my parameters.

Yes. A working XFree86 config file is required in order to get X to start...

Did you remember to use the -w switch when editing with nano? Also, we can provide much better troubleshooting help if you post your /etc/fstab file for us to look at.

Sorry... that sounded a little stupid. I know you have to have a working XF86config, I just didn't know if a generic one came with X already. That's beside the point now, though! I ran XF86config, made myself a nice config file, edited it so it would use the nv driver, started X, and it won't start now because it can't detect my mouse. I'm wondering at this point if I correctly compiled USB support into my kernel.
I'll paste my fstab into here just as soon as I get my mouse working well enough to let me copy/paste efficiently.
Thanks again for being patient with me. Had someone asked a question as stupid sounding as my first one, I would have probably laughed at them. |

No stupid questions exist....well unless its blatantly (sp?) obvious. Also remember at one point and time, everyone here was a "newbie"

OK, fixed fstab, too bad I've run into a new problem.
I thought the fact that my mouse was USB was what was giving me problems, because I have the same problems when I use the mouse on my ps/2 port (usb to ps/2 adapter). Turns out it's something else.
See, I can start X successfully now, haven't figured out how to get KDE running on top of it yet, but that will just require some doc reading on my part. The real problem is how my mouse functions. Once I get into X, if I move the mouse, the cursor zips around way the hell all over the place. It's uncontrollable. I also notice that when I move over text, it acts like my middle button (well, the mouse wheel) is held down and highlights anything my cursor happens to move across.
I've tried using 3 different protocols: mouseman, logitech, and microsoft. Microsoft and mouseman produce the erratic behavior, and the logitech one makes the mouse totall unresponsive.
My mouse is a logitech USB optical wheel mouse. Is my problem asociated with the fact that my mouse is optical? |

Still sounds like you're using the wrong protocol. But I couldn't tell you which one to use, I use ImPS/2 but I have an Intelli Mouse
Sorry |
