Hello all, I just got a sparcServer 10 with 336Mb of ram and running one processor. The questions I've got are these: 1) I only have an external CD-ROM for it. It's connecting to the SCSI port on the back of the machine but I'm not sure what number to make it. 2) I'm thinking of using the experimental 32bit live CD, how do I get this thing to boot from the CD ? thanks. _________________ AMD 64 3000+

ok> probe-scsi-all
then you can create an alias (with devalias) naming the device for example "cdromext"
ok> boot cdromext _________________ Listen to them, the children of the night

the major problem is that I can't get into the command prompt. I got this server when a department here at the university was upgrading and it seems like it's looking for a server or something because it hangs when it's booting up the rpc stuff it gives me an error where it says something like "le0: Cannot find hub network cable unplugged?" and keeps on repeating it. it's an entire chicken and egg sort of thing. I need to get on the command prompt to be able to boot from scsci but I can't get on command prompt unless I'm booting from scsci... unless there's someway of circumventing the entire thing. oh yeah, it's running solaris 5.9. is there someway I could make a floppy to boot off of? _________________ AMD 64 3000+

Most likely the network card choking on the auto-sensing of a 10/100 hub/switch that it is plugged into. I had to dig up an ancient 10baseT hub, plug the Sparc into it and plug that into the modern switch. I'd be curious if there is a simpler solution but hey, it works
Edit: And while technically probably correct, has nothing to do with your problem, yet anyway. Stop-A when it's initializing memory should get to to a boot prompt. |

Thanks, I'll try that. I've never messed with a sun machine before (except through the terminal at school) so I don't know any of the quick commands. _________________ AMD 64 3000+

maybe it is trying to boot from the net, type stop+a and then you'll be able to reach the obp prompt. Eventually you can do a
Code: |
ok setenv auto-boot? false
|
to avoid the autoboot
home this helps _________________ Listen to them, the children of the night

alright, I've been able to mess around with this some more. I'm trying to figure out how to reset the root password from the CD, When I boot into the CD in Single User Mode I can't make any changes to the file system because it's Read-Only. Any suggestions? _________________ AMD 64 3000+
