E-commerce site using Gentoo with Ruby on Rails:
http://www.snowdevil.ca/

I think the latest netcraft survey said there were appoximately 30,000 Gentoo web servers on the net?

edit:
March 2005: According to Netcraft Ltd. there are currently 63.160 webservers running Gentoo Linux, 45.1% more than six months ago.

I think Gentoo, by nature, is a bit too volatile to be running a stable production system. Use a heavily tested binary distro for that.

I'm in the process of redesigning and migrating my fathers company site to a Gentoo server at his workplace.

I'm going to assume a few developer sites run gentoo.

www.cardoe.com
www.compnerd.org
steev.net did for a while..til it moved to a new hoster,
my own tsunam.org does.

Seems a lot of personal sites do.

If you only upgrade packages for security fixes Gentoo is actually very stable. Most production servers wouldn't have an emerge -uD world run on them every 24 hours like a desktop machine. The www.gentoo.org website and the forums runs on Gentoo and is very very stable. The forums is the fifth largest phpBB in the world, if gentoo can run that and stay stable and secure it can run anything.

You can use a Gentoo image for your Linode (basically User Mode Linux Virtual Server) at linode.com. I am sure some of them run webservers (mine does, even though it is only for private use).

Down to the 8th place and falling...

At least it's, by far, the biggest linux forum in the world, for any software implementation.

But more importantly, it a damn big and stable forum, shows how much Gentoo is ready for servers.

BTW, to those who are running Gentoo servers: How easy is it?

Very easy, just monitor your logs and go :). Install something like chkrootkit etc just in case. Learn to setup apache with security in mind. The other thing I do is wait a while after something important comes out to see if it hits anyone with new bugs. Apache being one of them. Run x86 or what have you for anything important. Basically you want to remain stable as much as possible.

Me Me Me! Mine runs on gentoo. Now I have a small up-pipe tho, so if it's slow, it's cuz of that and my logs are getting way to big. I think I'm gonna have to let some go. I'm not sure how fast my cms can be either. I don't really know how slow it is to the world, but it's fast here on the inside. :D

I run Gentoo as a basis for my webserver, here. It's hosted off my home ADSL connection and not intended for lots of traffic. Basically I set it up so I could learn something about Linux, apache, MySQL etc. I also use it to keep logfiles and generate logs for the IRC channels I reside in.

It's only a Celeron 1Ghz system, but it does the job quite well!

whilst not a web server, I use Gentoo with Samba to power a substantial Windows Domain. Users login, get their desktops, files, quotas etc.. all that system.
As long as we are not trigger happy with portage things run extremely well

Nuclearfallout also uses gentoo.

http://nuclearfallout.net/whatamirunning?

I use it internally on quit a few servers; as a web server I have found gentoo more freindly than most binary dists as long as I stay away from ~arch.

My server isn't particularly busy, but it works well for what I use it for: web site serving, email occasionally, subversion, file server, and other random tasks I don't want my desktop doing :). So far it has worked well. The only problems I have had are setting up some of the server software and an Apache2 upgrade that nuked my index.html file on my only site at the time.

Oh, and I *just* got SSL working with a self-signed certificate. I am HAPPY! :D :D

gaiaonline.com, the biggest forum on the internet, uses one red hat server, one freebsd server, and about 110 gentoo linux servers.
