Hi,

my new bought http://vgear.com's landisk, which BTW is unusable with linux clients and even buggy when used by windows clients, seems to have a gentoo system running.

I have nmapped the landisk and my running gentoo box, and as nmap does not state the operating system properly, it prints out tcp signatures which look both pretty the same:

gentoo box:
TCP/IP fingerprint:
SInfo(V=3.75%P=i686-pc-linux-gnu%D=2/26%Tm=4220D408%O=22%C=1%M=0002B3)

nmap taken from a debian testing at v3.75

can anybody proof this?

The LanDisk does not run Gentoo or any type of Linux AFAIK. There are a lot of references to C: and A: in the device. I have absolutely no idea what it runs, so it could be Linux, just very obfuscated.

If it did run Linux then it would work a lot better and be a much more flexible device :P

Try the firmware update at vgear.com/cs/support as it fixes a number of problems.

Code:

[root@test2 data1]# nmap -sS -O -p1-65535 -v -P0 192.168.2.20

Starting nmap 3.81 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ ) at 2005-03-31 16:34 EST
Initiating SYN Stealth Scan against landisk.localdomain (x) [65535
ports] at 16:34
Discovered open port 23/tcp on x
Discovered open port 21/tcp on x
Discovered open port 80/tcp on x
Discovered open port 139/tcp on x
The SYN Stealth Scan took 12.50s to scan 65535 total ports.
For OSScan assuming port 21 is open, 1 is closed, and neither are firewalled
For OSScan assuming port 21 is open, 1 is closed, and neither are firewalled
For OSScan assuming port 21 is open, 1 is closed, and neither are firewalled
Host landisk.localdomain (x) appears to be up ... good.
Interesting ports on landisk.localdomain (x):
(The 65531 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
PORT    STATE SERVICE
21/tcp  open  ftp
23/tcp  open  telnet
80/tcp  open  http
139/tcp open  netbios-ssn
MAC Address: y (Unknown)
No exact OS matches for host (If you know what OS is running on it, see
http://www.insecure.org/cgi-bin/nmap-submit.cgi).
TCP/IP fingerprint:

TCP Sequence Prediction: Class=trivial time dependency
                         Difficulty=0 (Trivial joke)
IPID Sequence Generation: Incremental

Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 21.436 seconds
               Raw packets sent: 65651 (2.63MB) | Rcvd: 65577 (3.02MB)

LanDisk Firmware Version 014

The first thing I did when I got it was run nmap on it too :)

The fact that it says this:
SInfo(V=3.75%P=i686-pc-linux-gnu%D=2/26%Tm=4220D1AB%O=21%C=1%M=001314)

Says that it does run Linux. Whether or not it runs "Gentoo" is an unknown quantity. I would be intersted to know what version of Linux it does run, and if it does, where they publish their source code.

I have just spoken to V-Gear, who told me that the LanDisk does not run Linux, but µC/OS II.

I will see if I can at least get the source to that, as it would be cool to modify it :) Or make it run Linux :P

Perhaps that's an application cross-compiled from an i686-pc-linux-gnu host? As for getting the source to that RTOS, good luck... I don't think it likely, considering they're wanting you to hand over your personal details before they even let you see the price list.

Also, if it's one of the more exotic CPUs mentioned on their site, then Linux may be an impossibility. If it's a MIPS, x86 or ARM board, then you may have some joy... but I don't know of ports of Linux to the Motorola HC11 for instance. ;-)
