DVDshrink + wine -> failed to initialize ASPI device

  • Quote

Post by hiroki » Tue Apr 06, 2004 2:12 pm

Hi!

As the title already tells, I have a problem with DVDshrink (and it doesn't matter which version it is, I tried 2.2, 3.0b5, 3.16).

I have no problem installing or running DVDshrink. But as soon as I want to Open a disc in DVDshrink, it tells me:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue

Failed to initialize ASPI device

File not found
I can just click "OK".. And that's it. It's not possible to open a disc :(
What can be the error?
Maybe I misconfigured wine?

here's my wine-config:

Hi there,
I am new to burning DVD's and specifically wanted to shrink dvd9 to dvd5 and come across lxdvdrip
It's linux native (which I wanted) and it works! One command does the lot rip, shrink, preview and burn... All I can say is thankyou to the developers of these tools :D

This is due to the fact that DVDShrink expects and ASPI driver for your drive, and therefore the Open Disc function cannot be used when run with wine. However, you can use dvdbackup to rip the DVD to your hard drive, and then use Open Files within DVDShrink to process.

Hi!

thanks for your replies!

well, I can't use lxdvdrip (although I'd almost like to) because I want to keep the DVD menu.

OK, I ripped the DVD with dvdbackup first and then tried to open the files in DVDshrink. In DVDshrink 3.1 there is no way to open the files. I don't know why, but the open dialog in 3.1 just shows a tree, that only consists of the top-element called "Desktop". I tried everthing (I guess) in order to let it show the files in the open dialog, so I can open it.
In DVDshrink 2.2 everything works well. I can open the files. But there is the problem, that I cannot select a location for saving the new files created by DVDshrink! There the directoey-tree (top is Desktop) appears again and it's not possible to choose a valid directory. When I select "Desktop" as save/open location in 3.1 or 2.2 the OK button turns gray -> disabled.

What can I do, to finally get DVDshrink running in wine?
tried placing the ripped files to fake_windows/temp/, fake_windows/Windows/Desktop ...

Nothing seems to work :(

I am open to suggestions :|

I'm running 3.0 Beta 5, and I seem to recall that it was the only version I was able to get to work reliably with wine. Perhaps you can try that; if you can't find it, let me know and I can send you a copy.

Direct Access to Disc

  • Quote

Post by dangerweasel » Fri Apr 09, 2004 9:38 pm

I am able to read off of the disk direclty using the newest version, (3.1.7 I think). I found a post that mentioned using 2 dll files from a Windows install. I put them in, changed the appropriate section in the wine config file and fired it up. I mount the DVD, then click "Open Files" in DVDShrink and browse to the mount directory, bigdy-bam! I am making an ISO straight from the disc.

Hope This Help

PS. I cannot find the post listing the 2 dll files. I will post from home the 2 files that you will need

From the DVDShrink Forums

Firstoff, you need wine, look at http://www.winehq.org. Wine makes it possible to run Windows Apps on Linux. Then you need the plain binary of DVD Shrink 3.1.4 downloadable in this thread, furthermore you need two native Windows DLLs: uxtheme.dll (for xpsp1) and shlwapi.dll , search on google, you'll find them. Put this two DLLs in ~/.wine/fake_windows/Windows/System/
Now you have to tell wine to use this two DLLs, by running winesetup in the shell, under DLL set wine to use native DLLs first. You can set this globally or app specific, i recommend setting it app specific specially for DVD Shrink.

BTW: DVD Shrink 3.0b5 runs out of the Box with wine without fiddling around with native DLLs

hi!

thanks, i already tried using the two dll's. I also copied them from my win XP system's folder to my fake-windows' system folder. Well, I dn't know what it should have improved. But with DVDshrink 3.1.6 I wasn't able to open files.

I'll have to try 3.1.7 then. Thanks.

errors, lets see those dlls

I have a couple errors, the usual that pop up on boards:
I get teh ASPI error when trying to open the disk, so id like to try the DLL fix. I use the win98 emulation, so I cant use my Windows XP dlls

Also, when I try and open files from the hard disk (using 317+), I get only the desktop entry that I cannot expand. If I hit enter on the desktop, it gives the unhandled exception.

So ive been using 30b5, and I can open files.

So please bring on the help, id like to use 317 if possible, and id like to be able to read directly from the disc.

i was also receiving the ASPI errors. I was able to solve this by adding the following lines in my ~/.wine/config:

Code: Select all

[AppDefaults\\DVD Shrink 3.2.exe\\Version]
"Windows" = "winxp"
alternatively you could edit the line in the same file

change

Code: Select all

"Windows" = "win98"
to

Code: Select all

"Windows" = "winxp"
as discussed in this post, different DLLs are loaded depending in the windows version. using windows xp will force DLLs required by DVD Shink.

hope this helps

have fun "backing up" your netflix collections

Here's a guide, worked for me. I just emerge winesetuptk, ran it and then installed DVD Shrink. Worked fine for both DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.

I followed that guide too, but my STPI option was greyed out in dvd decrypter and I still got aspi errors in dvd-shrink...

anyone know of any userflags or cflags that might cause problems? I'm downgrading to wine-20050111-r1 to see if that helps (I was using whatever was currently ~x86 before)

EDIT: 20050111-r1 had more problems than the ~x86 build, so I'm back up to 20050725.. still no STPI and still ASPI errors. Can see the DVD-Drive fine in Shrink, but it won't let me access it... using WinXP mode, tried nt40...

I ran into the same thing with several versions of dvdshrink, but I found that you can open dvd image files or directories from the command line. Just make sure you're in a directory that wine knows about and use:

wine path_to_dvd_shrink_exe dvd_folder

...and it works fine.

I use linux to get away from problems like this.
Might I suggest

http://dvdshrink.sourceforge.net/index.html

This program doesn't do menus, unfortunately.
It's a bash script. I learned a few things when
I looked through the code. It's worth downloading
just for this, if nothing else.

Have Fun

I just tried with the latest ~x86 Version of Wine (20050725) and it works great!

Just emerge wine, then run

Code: Select all

wine dvdshrink32setup.exe
to install DVD Shrink.
After you installed DVD Shrink, run

Code: Select all

winecfg
, select WinXP as Version (or create a profile for DVD Shrink). On the "Drives" tab, add your CD drive (and, of course, choose "Type: CD-ROM") and that's it!
