|
I can hardly wait....Think of the ease of use....no more hassle with building your own optimized binaries! Finally be able to see .i386.rpm on all my portage packages, oh joy! Together we can build a new RedHat and maybe even a graphical installer.
All I have left on my wishlist for Gentoo now is to be able to run Windows XP's windowmanager instead of these lousy free ones...open source is overrated...I think it's just as we say in Sweden...en fluga...just a passing thing While waiting for someone to port WIndows XP's windowmanager I could be satisfied by a WM I saw a while back that emulated the looks och feel of Win2K.
No more USE variable that I have to edit every time I get a new portage...I think conformity is the way to go...RPM is the future. Sure the goal when starting out with portage must have been to make a better ports variant that would also be portable between platforms, but praise the lord, the developers has seen the light!
Oh joy! Once again since I switched to Gentoo I will be able to experience circular RPM dependencies like under RedHat and BlueHat (Mandrake), I say it's a right given us by the god Bill Gates to enjoy not beeing able to install only what is needed but what someone much more intelligent has through studies, proved to be the ultimate mix of programs and also not beeing able to uninstall certain programs and languages.

Ooooh, I REALLY hope it's a joke. PLEASE! tell me it's just a joke! I migrated from Mandrake because of bloat to FreeBSD and fell in love with its package manager. I missed the better hardware support of Linux and came accross Gentoo which I now love because of portage. All portage needs is to be able to remove packages that are now being used. Like if I install gnome and then don't like it, I would like to uninstall gnome and all the other garabage (I mean nice apps and libraries) that comes with. |

It had better be a joke. That's not funny. If it's true I will wipe gentoo off my PC that instant. I don't like RPMs. I HATE RPMs. I'm sure it's a joke, but if it's not, this distro is going to have a BIG problem. That said, reasons it's a joke:
- We're source based, LSB isn't
- RPMs Suck (no this isn't an editorial, it's a fack )
- Gentoo is a good distro
Some jokes just aren't funny. _________________ -- Michael

Compiling optimized binaries is the primary reason I like Gentoo. Ebuilds are a thousand times better than RPM's.
In RPM based distributions the packages just don't mesh well together. I've seen a few packages that have strange deps. Other times you have to install all sorts of things you really don't want (or need) just because someone somewhere decides that you need them.
Compliance with a Linux standard shouldn't require one to lobotomize their system.
Don't trash an elegant, efficient system for one with the only claim to fame of being widely used. |

Oh my god. They had me hook, line and sinker. Now I know why they delayed GWN by one day! Needed to fix a hardware problem my ass.
I was even beginning to try to convince myself that it would be a good idea...

Red Hat forgot about the end users and started that RPM crap. I HATE RPMS!!!! The reason I like gentoo soo much IS portage, If I loved RPMs I would be a RedHat junkie! I like the way things are currently setup, allowing you to install rpms (if needed) of course this is after the day search for dependencies! I really like the way emerge and ebuilds are setup. RPMs will introduce more problems, why do that when things seem to work great now, why not better something that makes you different ( like portage MAKES gentoo) rather than do what "everyone else" is doing. IF they do go RPM-based that will make nothing more than a long @ss install of RedHat!!! I pray and hope that this is an April fool's joke!!!! because, like many others I will format!
Whew! had to get that all out... I hope this is a joke... but, that would mean that tomorrow is when the joke should go down, not the 31st of March! right? |

The newsletter is actually dated for April 1st in giant black letters so I guess it's April 1st for someone somewhere. |

I really hope it's a joke. I was so buying it while I'm reading it and thinking OMG! Then I'm thinking wait in someplace it's april 1st and maybe this is a joke. So I go to the forums and find this thread which gives me hope that maybe it is. I mean seriously. You can use an RPM in gentoo as it is now. We would gain nothing by ditching ebuild in favor of RPM. It would be quite illogical since IMHO portage and ebuilds are why gentoo is the shit. Anyway now that I'm done hyperventalating I'm gona go back to studying .
P.S.
This is up there with the joke on Toms Hardware last year where he reported on Nvidia buying AMD. That one had me going too. _________________ 01001010 01010100 01001000 01001010
