How long is AMD64 available?

There is hardly anything that is not masked. How safe is it to use the masked apps? I only tried to unmask wine, but it doesn't even compile.

Heck, it isn't even safe to use the released apps!
- Cups just doesn't finish its emerge.
- Rezound is released, but crashes if you just hit "play".
- Opera 8.01 released, doesn't work
- Hardly any of the mediaplayers really plays.

Do I have problems with my install/config, or is the situation in 64bit land really that bad?

Well, it doesn't seem to be THAT bad...

I have a mostly stable x86_64 setup with about all the apps I need. Yes, including cups... ;-) And amarok plays all the music I want. The other apps you mentioned I don't use.

Do you use aggressive USE-flags, or anything else that is not common?

EDIT: Kaffeine here works fine too, as well as kaboodle, kmplayer, kuickshow, mplayer, etc.

Opera is 32bit only i think, so you'll need to make sure you have 32bit emulation compiled into your kernel.

The problem does sound like your config, though wine probably won't install correctly right now (search for a thread on it, theres a big one, i haven't tried though, i'm a cedega man myself).

Whats the output of emerge --info?

Well, playing audio works only half. Xmms loads, and plays like you would think it does, but it never just plays the playlist. It starts with the first, then jump to some other song, then skip a few and ends. If you play the playlist again it may play some others, but never the whole list in order. And yes, random is "off". If you select a single line in the playlist, it randomly goes to some other line and plays that.

Not a single of the video players works as intended. Kaffeine plays without sound, or just flashes to the whole file in a split second. Mplayer mostly just shows black, sometimes with audio. And if it plays video, then the sound is broken-up with a huuuge echo in it. VLC player just spins an hourglass and closes itself. Xine works with dvd but nothing else. Quickshow (released version) just goes into a memory leak until the system kills it.

Opera is a precompiled version with static libs. Even that doesn't work.

I read that thread on wine, but I don't even get a single message mentioned in it. So I guess I don't even get as far as where the thread starts.

The system is stable enough, that is no problem. It is just that besides some surfing and mail I cannot do a single thing with it!

Code:

daw2 ~ # emerge --info

Don't know where it gets all those USE flags, I only put 1/4 of them in there myself.

Really?

Opera is crappy and inferior software. Use Mozilla Firefox.

Really?

MPlayer+KMPlayer work here like a charm.

Also beep-media-player.

Mozilla is crappy and inferior software. Use Opera after installin 32bit emulation :)
Amarok, mpd xmms, beep-media-player all work and play mp3/ogg/mpc/flac, 32bit mplayer works also with 32bit codecs.

make srue you have the appropriate plugins for music playback. for example anything based on the gstreamer backend won't play mp3s by default, you have to have the mp3 plugin for it. make sure all thats in order.

for video, what formats are you trying to play? do you have xvid and divx installed? if its wmv8 or 9 odds are you can't play it without using 32bit mplayer.

also: whast teh error opera is throwing. you probably haven't compiled in 32bit emulation
