I'm installing alsa from the manual at:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml
and I get to the point of #update-modules and I get this error:
depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/kernel/drivers/char/drm/sis.o
I have a soundblaster awe64 sound card. I followed the directions and I don't know what's going on. Can anyone help? |

I've run into the same problem. I don't remember what I did to fix it but it was not hard or painful.
One problem I've run into is that update-modules assumes you've got the sbin's on your path so "sudo update-modules" sometimes fails.
If you've recently compiled a new kernel to get alsa working, you may need to reboot into the new kernel for things to work properly.
You should also make sure that your /usr/src/linux symlink is pointing in the right direction.

KsE,
I also had the exact same problem. I solved it by:
1. carefully following the instructions in the user docs
2. ensuring that only "sound card support" was being loaded as a module into the kernel
3. The final thing that did it for me was to remove "Set version information on all module symbols" option when I rebuilt my kernel. Check out Chapter 6 of Linux Loadable Kernel Module HOWTO if you want to understand why this works! I am pretty sure that if you followed steps 1 and 2, then this should do it for you. Let me know if this works or if you need more details.
good luck. |
