My PIII laptop has a 64MB Radeon Mobility in it.. so far, I haven't really seen the performance I would expect.. I'm currently just using the Radeon driver (proper) from the gentoo-sources -> Character Devices -> DRM -> Radeon section of the kernel config... are there better drivers out there (like the Detonators for nvidia cards (I use at home))?? Is there any tweaks for the Radeon in Linux? I'm an nvidia verteran in Linux, but really haven't messed with any ATI products in the Linux environment...

Question. You are using Xfree 4.3.0? And DRI works without you freezing your system when logging out?

actually, I didn't use any unmasking, so I believe I'm running Xfree version 4.2.x.. Should I do an 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge xfree" to get 4.3.x?? I've had no lockups or anything wierd going on, just less performance than I'd expect (less than I had in slackware, anyway)... I'll try some games I'm used to playing this weekend and see how they do...

btw, if I am running xfree 4.2.x, would it help my gaming to upgrade to 4.3.x with my Geforce 3 at home?? Games run well (one game bombs out on Signal 11 errors alot, I'm changing my RAM to see if that solves it) for the most part, but ut2003 is quite a bit slower in gentoo than in *cough!* WinblozeXpee *cough!*...

Yes, you can go ~x86 and get 4.3.0, but I cannot get DRI working without having system freezes...

Hi,
i have two radeon, working without freezing:
I always take the drivers from http://gatos.sourceforge.net.

XFree86 Version 4.3.0 and the newest gatos ;-(
looks like freezing when login out from X but the system is working, only the monitor is shutting down.
I could flip to a console and reboot the machine. Restarting X doesn't work.

XFree86 Version 4.2.99.4 and gatos 4.3.0-2 ;-)
no freezing and dri working.
gatos 4.3.0-3, 4.3.0-4 and 4.3.0-5 don't work on my system.

Perhaps i should try out all the gatos-drivers on the XFree86 Version 4.3.0 system?

Frank
