|
|
hi, i wanted to know, if it is possible zu install gentoo over an isdn line.
please don't tell me that it _should_ be possible.
did anyone here actually _do_ it that way?
stage 1 install is not possible as much as i know.
but when i do a stage 3 install, do i have the necessary tools to get my isdn connection running (isdn4k-utils etc...) to do "emerge"?
thanks in advance |

Well, yes, it should be possible; it's a matter of if you have the patience, skill, and luck necessary to pull it off. You'd need the appropriate drivers on a separate disk, and so forth... it is possible, but it's messy. |

I dont think it would be too messy, if you have a spare partition. All you have to do is... instead of booting off the install disk, do all the pre-installing stuff(like mke2fs and chroot....etc) from you existing linux installation (ie, use you current distro as the boot disk), that way networking is allready up

Yeah, but that's still a lot more messy than "boot off the CD and follow this 12-page document"... may not be worth it to Guest. |

i did a stage 3 gentoo install. worked fine with no problems.
but installing additional packages without a working ethernet connection is nearly impossible. how can i emerge isdn4k-utils, when i don't have an isdn connection .... (additionally isdn4k-utils is masked becauso it is said to be broken)
not to speak about dependencies.
sad, that installing on a computer with a dialup connection is so hard. i'm not a newbie, but this goes beyond me. sry.
btw: in germany (where i live) 50% of the internet user have an isdn connection, another 40% or so have still modem ... |

As I said:

You'd have to have the necessary packages downloaded and on some media to be able to get access to the 'net from Gentoo. |
