I want to install vnware on my gentoo, but there is one mistake, please help me :

./vmware-install.pl
A previous installation of VMware software has been detected.

The previous installation was made by the tar installer (version 3).

Keeping the tar3 installer database format.

Uninstalling the tar installation of VMware Workstation.

The removal of VMware Workstation 4.5.1 build-7568 for Linux completed
successfully. Thank you for having tried this software.

Installing the content of the package.

In which directory do you want to install the binary files?
[/usr/bin]

What is the directory that contains the init directories (rc0.d/ to
rc6.d/)?

The path "" is not an existing directory.[/quote]

How can I do?

You can if you want an old version (with much poorer 2.6 support).

VMware has released not one, but TWO versions (4.5 and 4.51) newer
than the latest version available in portage (4.05), and, in general, they
don't release versions very often, either.

actually, the 4.05 version IS the one in portage, however, when you emerge it it also emerges the 4.51 patch

and your mistake is that it was asking where the init scripts are "(rc0.d to rc6.d)" and you answered with a blank by just pressing enter...

Have you tried the ebuilds? Portage includes 4.5.2.8848 and 5.0.0.13124.

portage has the newer 5.0 series also, you just need to unmask it, emerge it, and run the vmware config script.
Code:
echo "=app-emulation/vmware-workstation-5.0.0.13124-r1 ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

emerge vmware-workstation

/opt/vmware/vmware-config

If you have a amd64, change ~x86 to ~amd64 above.

The rc.d/... style will not work on Gentoo.

You want v5 of vmware, tons better support for the 2.6 kernels and seems to run smoother. I used to use the 4.51 till I learned that the 5 was masked, then I switched. I would never go back to v4

Update: I found that I had to do the following in order to unmask 5.0. (I'm a n00b so I don't know why...perhaps due to a change in the mask since this was posted?):

Code:
echo ">=app-emulation/vmware-workstation-5.0.0.13124 -*" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

emerge vmware-workstation

/opt/vmware/vmware-config

But it was enough to get me going down the right path, so I thank you for the post.

But really: it's not that hard to create directories rc[0-6].d somewhere and tell vmware to use that.
The only thing that's being done is the start-script being copied to one of these rc.d directories.
You can simply move it to /etc/init.d and change it to whatever you like.

You know, if you don't want to, there's no need to use portage: all things portage does, you can do yourself. It only makes things less tedious, but that's about it.
