Ask 7 different people what the best FTP server is, and you will get 7 different replies.
Just to add my 2 cents, I use proftpd, and I have been very happy with it. It is very powerful and configurable. The configuration file is somewhat Apache-like, and it is very clear for me to understand. Furthermore, there is good online documentation available at http://proftpd.linux.co.uk/. |

It really depends on what you want to do with your ftp server.
If you just need a quick anonymous ftp server then I recommend vsftpd like the poster above.
If you need something more elaborate I'd go with pureftpd.
For my work I need to access and change users and data on my ftpserver, give some users special paths as root paths and so on. Also I need to limit the bandwidth and a couple other things that don't come to my mind right now because it's still early in the day
But pureftpd works quite nicely together with mysql - I got a db for users and what they can do and where stored there and pureftpd just gets the info from mysql.
Proftpd can do the same as well. I used it before but I changed some time ago to pureftpd because ithe configuration for me was more transparent.
I am not saying that proftdp is bad - by no means, works really good too - it all comes down to personla taste here. |
