Hello

I'm trying to boot the universal CD on a Alpha Server DS20E, but the system halt while loading the kernel gentoo-2.6.

I'm following the procedure described in gentoo handbook as:

P00>>>show device
dqa0.0.0.105.0 DQA0 CD-224E 9.5B
P00>>>boot dqa0 -flags 0
.
.
.
The system appear to boot correctly, but it halts after:
aboot: starting kernel /boot/gentoo-2.6 with arguments root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc looptype=zisofs loop=/zisofs noudev devfs cdroot

No more messages are displayed. The only thing that happen is the background color change from blue to red :?

Does anybody can help me?

best regards
Rafael.

There are two boot options in aboot:
0: the 2.6 kernel - turns red for me also
1: the 2.4 kernel - this i can boot on my machine

I have the same issue. Has anyone been able to get a working 2.6 kernel working on your alpha system? Ive got a Compaq Professional Workstation XP1000 here. Newest firmware installed

Hi Matt

I just have the "red screen" during the boot.

After booting the live CD with kernel 2.4, there was no problem to compile 2.6 kernel and boot the installed system with it.

To boot the live CD I used the following command:

>>>boot dqa0 -flags 1

best regards

Yes, I also have successfully used the
Code:
>>> boot DQA0 -flags 1
command to get the live CD to boot properly. It is odd though, the machine i have has been freezing at random points.. i have to power down to get it working for me. So far it has frozen at detecting hardware, during the keyboard map selection, while unpackaging the stage 1 tarball, and now again at
Code:
* Starting local...                                                                                     [ok]
So in any event, i am not sure what is causing the freezes. I am wondering if it is just the kernel on the live CD, or if there is something buggy with the hardware. I am sifting through some other sections in here to see if i can find an answer. If not ill be starting anew thread.

I've got 2.6.11-8 working perfectly with no issues on two PC164 alphas (500Mhz EV56).

I have a new EV67 system coming next week, a dual-667Mhz 264DP system which is basically identical to a DS20. I'll see how things go when I start the Stage I install on the 264DP.....

Still no success with this machine. Anyone else been having issues?

Kernel 2.6 wont boot,
Kernel 2.4 randomly freezes the machine.

Compaq Professional Workstation, XP1000

Oi! I wish the problem werent so random. Definitely a hardware issue. Tru64 Unix was working just fine. Too bad it is way too out of date to use still.

Me too, I just finished installing gentoo on DEC 433au 'Miata'-system and 2.6.11.8 works perfectly with it.

Does anybody of you, who have successfully installed 2.6, have any problems with modules?

2005.1 live CD works fine for me : 2.6.11.8 ... at least to boot the CD.

Now I have my bash, I wonder whether I shall use PC partition table, or BSD like Sarge does ... and cant find tuto ... lets post this now, and grab further.

please use a Sarge CD, choose option "format 100% automatically the HDD", then post us
lspci
and
/proc/cpuinfo

thats a good base to know what you have around.

(not that this is easy for me, since I have four new rakable HDDs ... for two alpha servers: easy to install, exchange, try, format, restart ... )
