Well, I retried and it's working. YEAH !!
The only default is that I don't know what I did to make it work.
But it's ok.
I tested it underGnomeMeeting(offline) and the picture is not really good but enough to play making motion detection.
I will code & see.

This thread is fantastic! I installed the latest driver for my quickcam messenger: qc-usb-messenger-0.8.tar.gz (2005-01-04), but somehow there is no /dev/video* nor /dev/v4l after I load the driver. When I launched camorama or gqcam, they complain: can't open /dev/video. I must've been missing something obvious here.
My kernel is 2.6.9-gentoo-r1, and I enabled v4l in kernel. This is the output of lsmod:
Code: |
saturn root # lsmod
Module Size Used by
v4l2_common 6144 0
ohci_hcd 21700 0
quickcam 119080 0
videodev 10112 1 quickcam
uhci_hcd 33072 0
usbcore 118244 5 ohci_hcd,quickcam,uhci_hcd
|
The quickcam messenger can be detected by lsusb:
Code: |
saturn root # lsusb
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 046d:0850 Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Web
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0451:1446 Texas Instruments, Inc. TUSB2040/2070 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
|
Also, could anyone tell me which one is tru: the devfsd creates the /dev/video device 1) when the videodev is loaded or, 2) when quickcam is loaded? At this point, I am really confused -- please help! |

I plug the webcam it loads automatically modules 'quickcam' and 'audio' (if you enable usb audio support in your kernel).
I make:
Code: |
rmmod audio
rmmod quickcam
|
then I launch the script and it works.
Strange way, but it works at home. |

As I posted earlier in this thread, /dev/v4l/video0 is created just fine at boot time, but when starting my Gnome session, permissions are changed, and it makes user apps can't acces the webcam. I think it's a hal/dbus problem, so I'd like you people post here if youse Gnome/KDE and if you are running dbus/hal and udev.
Now I see you people not using udev seem to have problems with the /dev entries not being automatically created.
I'm going to open a bug report, to know what the devs think about this. It's weird, as any other module is failing. Perhaps the ebuild fails to do something important. _________________ La PDA de tungsteno |

I used the webcam with my laptop and I don't have the webcam always plug.
The device /dev/video0 is only created when I plug the webcam with the correct module.I think this is the normal way.
When the device /dev/video0 is not created the pb seems to come from the quickcam module not devfs or udev or ... |

Someone beats me -- just found out mine is quickcam web instead of quickcam messenger (darn the deveivingly similar looks of these two cams). lsusb told me clearly it is a quickcam web but I never read the output carefully (which costed me BIG time).
Anyway, I installed qc-usb driver. /dev/v4l and /dev/video were automiatically created when the driver was loaded (I am using devfs). Thanks guys -- you are great |

Hi, I still have the same problem, thought of trying it again, this time in x86 instead of amd64.
Still no succes. The driver seems to load fine:
Code: | quickcam [ 0.192683]: ----------LOADING QUICKCAM MODULE------------
quickcam [ 0.192687]: struct quickcam size: 3896
quickcam: QuickCam USB camera found (driver version QuickCam Messenger/Communicate USB $Date: 2004/12/30 10:00:00 $)

quickcam: Registered device: /dev/video0

|
But when trying to view the webcam with camorama, dmesg gives the following output:
Code: | quickcam [44.227484]: open users=1
quickcam [44.231982]: qc_sensor_init: call qc_sensor_setsize0 (324,248)

and camorama tells me it's unable to capture image.
Now, I've tried maxdamage's solution to rmmod and modprobe but I does't work.
I don't think permissions are the problem, as I tried capturing being root which gave me the same error.
Btw, my user is also in the video group, so it shouldn't be a problem (?). To be sure I tried chowning, but it still doesn't work.
I use kde 3.4.1, with udev.
I hope someone can help me with this problem,

After a while of trying to hack apart the different files etc. I gave up for a few months. Now, when I'm supposed to be revising for my exams, I tried again and (after messing about for an age I started from scratch and this worked so I'm posting here. This way, if anyone does like I did, and reads to the end of the thread and *still* doesn't know what's going on, they should just be able to copy blindly and get it working (note that I've assumed that your kernel is already compiled with video4linux support (I compiled it in because I don't like having lots of modules listed when I do a lsmod) If you've not done that, you'll probably need to re-compile. Just about every video HOWTO tells you how to put it in there):
1) Delete all the crap I downloaded to do with the quickcam (ls /usr/portage/distfiles|grep qc will tell you what you've downloaded in your attempts. It might not be vital that you delete it but I did just to make sure that I was actually doing it from scratch)
2) rm -r /usr/local/portage/media-video/qc-usb-messenger (once again just to be sure)
#And now you're back at square 1
3) add PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" to /etc/make.conf if it's not already there
4) mkdir /usr/local/portage/media-video/qc-usb-messenger && mkdir /usr/local/portage/media-video/qc-usb-messenger/files
5) go to https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=84956 and download the first 2 attachments you see. put qc-usb-messenger-0.8.ebuild in /usr/local/portage/media-video/qc-usb-messenger/ and put 0.8-linux-2.6.11.patch in /usr/local/portage/media-video/qc-usb-messenger/files/
#You now have files that I have seen work and you don't have any files that might screw you over (I hope)
6) ebuild /usr/local/portage/media-video/qc-usb-messenger/qc-usb-messenger-0.8.ebuild digest
7) emerge qc-usb-messenger
8)a) modules-update (or in my case reboot)
8)b) modprobe quickcam
9) add your username to the video line in /etc/group
10) xawtv -c /dev/video0 (may need you to logout and back in again in order to get permissions (or just bring up a root terminal). emerge xawtv if you haven't done it already)
11) if it works out of the box, post here and post on the bugzilla bug so that we can get it put into the portage tree propper so other people don't have to suffer like you had to :P Oh, and echo quickcam > /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6 so you don't have to do it every time you reboot
EDIT: on a reboot, it found the module straight away. Turns out I forgot to do modules-update before modprobe quickcam :$ Also, upon reboot, I can do it without root. I had to add my username to video in /etc/group
from my old message:
Quote: | For some reason that didn't actually work for me. It said it couldn't find the module or something. I think it might be something I've done with my kernel config. The module (for me) was installed here: /lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r5/drivers/usb/quickcam.ko so I just typed insmod /lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r5/drivers/usb/quickcam.ko and it stopped complaining. It might have been a dangerous thing to do, because I don't really know what insmod does, but it worked and I have my pic on the screen whenever I type xawtv -c /dev/video0 (or /dev/video or /dev/v4l/video0, because they appear to be linked together) Also, for some reason I have the problem that it only works when I type it in a root terminal but I'll deal with that later/never |
I hope this gets people seeing their ugly faces that they've missed seeing so much since they switched to linux :D
note: this message doesn't really say anything new. It's just hopefully easier to follow and it has my stamp of "works for me" on it (I use KDE 3.4, udev 056, and linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r5 kernel at the time of posting. I don't know what hal or dbus are, and portage informs me that neither are installed) _________________ <alsuren 22:07:55> I thought it was 42

Glad I could be of help :D
Remember to post on the bugzilla if it wasn't working before but it is now. If anyone knows how to get "dbus" or "hal" working with this eBuild, post that too because it would be nice to get this package put into ~x86 sometime soon so we can ease the pain of others _________________ <alsuren 22:07:55> I thought it was 42

Worked for me!
To tell the truth it had been a while since I tried using my webcam and I noticed a month or so ago it wasn't working with the newer kernels. Just tried with the patch and it worked fine for me, right "out of the box". _________________ When it is not necessary to make a decision, it is necessary not to make a decision. |

Has anyone got the camera's microphone working? I've read most of the threads on the subject, and I have it partially working--when the camera is plugged in, the quickcam, audio, and snd-usb-audio modules are loaded, and the devices /dev/sound/dsp1 and /dev/sound/mixer1 are created. I can hear sounds the mic picks up by doing a
Code: | cat < /dev/sound/dsp1 > /dev/sound/dsp |
and I can record them with brec. However, vlc won't stream audio from /dev/sound/dsp1, and the microphone is not recognized by Gnomemeeting as an audio input device. My /etc/modules.d/alsa is currently in its pre-webcam state (i.e. before I had the webcam, only one sound card) because I wasn't having success with any of the posted configurations.
Most of the threads on the topic are over two years old...can anyone point me to a configuration procedure that will get ALSA to recognize the microphone?
BTW, alsuren's procedure for getting the video set up worked wonderfully. _________________ "WTF, mate?" |

I've confirmed that the audio does work in GnomeMeeting 1.2.1--if I select OSS as my audio driver, I can choose /dev/sound/dsp1 as an input device. I don't have it working with ALSA, but this is good enough for me.
And yes, the patch does work with 2.6.12. _________________ "WTF, mate?" |

I followed this thread's advice with great success on a gentoo kernel 2.6.12-r10 but unfortunatly after switching to the 2.6.13-r3, I get an error message during the boot process that complains about the format of the quickcam module that is not recognize by the kernel.
Has anyone of you "suffered" from such a problem? |

Normaly yes. I've re-emerged the driver (using the ebuild found on this thread) after installing the new kernel. I will try it again tonight.
EDIT:
I've re-emerged it and it works fine
Seems that it uses the name of the current running kernel rather than the /usr/src/linux link (i.e: when I re-emerge it with my gentoo-2.6.12 kernel runing and with the /usr/src/linux pointing to gentoo-2.6.13 it fails but when I emerge it with gentoo-2.6.13 runing it works). It's maybe the normal way but I'm was not aware of it |

thanks! it works!
I spend a lot of time to get my quickcam working and this post solved all of my problems.
why doesn't portage have qc-usb-messenger? I think it could be usefull to save time looking for driver and getting it working.

Ok I followed this post and tried this But still no /dev/video or /dev/v4l/video
this is what I have so far.
Code: |

1) I built my kernel with Device Drivers -> Multimedia devices -> <*> Video For Linux
and also Device Drivers -> USB Support -> USB Philips Cameras (just incase)
(they are built in)
2) emerge qc-usb-messenger
3) modules-update
4) echo quickcam > /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6
5) added username to the video line in /etc/group
6) then I rebooted
here is my dmesg
