cups client-error-not-possible with jetdirect

I'm trying too print to an hp jetdirect printer. I installed cups, started it up and entered the web management at http://localhost:631.

I added an hp laserjet printer on port socket://printerhostname:9100/ and selected the right driver. When I try to print a test page it gives the error "client-error-not-possible".

I can print to the printer from a windows computer and a redhat computer using their printtool utility. Any ideas?

I followed the gentoo printer faq and ran the foomatic command. This seems to have worked well. Now, isntead of the error mentioned above... the job is processing... and continues while the printer status reports that the printer is busy and it will retry in ## seconds (where ## continues to increase in 5sec increments)
