You'll be after a video card that doesn't require initialisation by an x86 BIOS. Such cards do exist... but which ones fit the bill I do not know.

AFAIK there will also be further complications as I'm not sure that 32-bit PCI cards work in the Origin... but I could be wrong here.

Incidentally, is there any reason why you're wanting X to run directly on this beast? Why not save some effort and use XDMCP?

That is a good idea:D I have no good reason to run X directly off the box. I would rather use it remotely. If I get this system running correctly, I have one of those Origin 2000 racks. The big refrigerator sized ones, If I can find the space in my server room do you think it is possible to get this up and running without a lot of SGI hardware knowledge?

I am going to start with the 200 as my first project, I think that will give me a good introduction to the SGI arch.

Without a lot of SGI knowledge? Well, they're one complex beast. You'll possibly want to go join us in #gentoo-mips on irc.freenode.net, as there's a special procedure needed to netboot these things.

And I hope you're prepared for the power bill that these things will generate.

I think I will keep it simple to start, I am sure that I will run into plenty of challenges getting the 200 Running. If that goes well I can start reading up on the Origin 2400 series.

thanks

I'm not sure if this will work with a pci card, you should probably go for an Impact card (SI?).

You should ask this at www.nekochan.net.

Galahad: He'd need more than that I think. The Impact driver for Linux is totally untested on IP27, so it's highly unlikely that it'd work.

According to Stan (IP30 Author), Octane-based XIO boards won't work in Origin-based systems due to a different design of the compression connector(s). I'm not sure if you can swap out the compression connectors, however, to make them fit. I think Stan is going to be attempting this eventually.

XIO cards seem to work in a gigachannel option.
