I've just installed Gentoo Linux from the stage1 bootstrap, and have so far been quite impressed. I'm a long time Linux user and have built systems 'by hand' with Slackware so everything was quite familiar to me. However I think there are some areas where the installation documentation could be improved for 'Newbies'.
1) I sensibly printed out the installation guide before starting, however I got to the end with a succesfully installed system and realised I had almost no idea how to continue. I think it would be a very good idea if the installation document got you to the point of having X windows and a browser running so that you can find the rest of the documentation online. As it was I had to boot into MS Windows ME!
2) Some suggestion of how to find out what hardware you have would have been useful, luckily I had installed Mandrake8.2 on the machine previously and new exactly what was in there, on 'unknown' hardware and without web-access (which would be the case part way through install) I might have come unstuck.
Maybe the best solution would be to include some more of the HOWTOs in all the ISOs and how to find them in the installation document.

For your first point the Desktop guide is what I think you are looking for.
You raise a good point about putting more of the documentation on the CD. _________________ Postcount ++ |

That's really the right thing to do. But you only got one of the (many) documents... _________________ | www.gentoo.org | www.tldp.org | www.google.com | |

I think what's needed is a 'where to go from here' section at the end of the installation document, written bearing in mind that the user may only have their freshly installed gentoo system with no web-browser.
I think part of the problem for me was that there were so many documents, I made the mistake of assuming that the installation guide would get me to a point where I could easily find the others and finish things off.
