Does anyone know a good program to search for shared files on the local network?
Features that would be nice:
* Able to ping computers.
* Search for all kind of files, not just mp3's.
* Open and manage shared folders like a filemanager. |

please correct me if Im wrong...
updatedb should put all files from mounted shares into your db, so you can use locate whateveryoulike
so you do something like
Code: |
mount //share/somewhere/on/the/network /to/your/favorite/place
updatedb
locate Britney Spears - Oops I did it again.mp3
|
this should do the job... for pinging other computers I recomend a program called "ping"
sorry, but I think I dont get the point... seems like youre looking for an all-in-one program, but you dont really expect that someone will post something like just emerge -p theultimativeallinonefilemanagerpingsearchtool _________________ I'm really wondering what Lovechild is doing nowadays... |

Well, that was what I was hoping for. I have a nice program to do this on my windows partition, Mp3get. That does the things I wrote, but only searches for mp3's and avi's. Unfortunately Wine(X) corrupts the graphics for the panels, so I can't use it.

Hmm, what about writing a script that mounts all shares in the local network, and then do the search? And write a nice gui frontend to this. Is this an acceptable solution? |

If you're running KDE, you can do most of this with Konqueror (and Samba on the machines that are sharing files). As others have said, the best way to ping machines is with "ping". (Unless you're trying to do something odd that we don't know about)
Galeon can probably do a lot of this stuff too, but I run KDE so I'm not 100)% sure. |

Ok, I use LISA with Konqueror now.
But I can only see a few computers when opening LAN browsing. Also I can't access SMB shares, only HTTP and FTP. And I can't see the netbios name, only the host/domain.
I guess I must fix my LISA settings...
Thanks for the help! |

I haven't been able to get smb shares to work with lan browsing in Konqueror either. You can still access the shares like this though:

[whine]
It seems the only practical way to search SMB shares on the LAN; Konqueror with LISa, is unacceptable bad.
- Can't call WINS server for list of computers
- NetBIOS names don't show
- When browsing LAN, SMB shares for a computer don't show, have to write smb://computername
- There is no way to tell the search tool to only search in SMB shares, and to avoid password protected shares.
- EDIT: Streaming audio and video don't work the way I want it either, it downloads the whole thing first, then play it.

I am going to give it a try writing a better program, not too optimistic though. |
