First off I've read every thread I could find here about ATI Gatos, Tivo style boxes... etc. And while many of them contain good info it just seems I can't get this to work. Maybe I am trying the Imposible who knows. But I have a box I want to use as a Tivo. It is a p3 933 256mb ram. It has a ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 7500 in it. I've had this all working in windows but I really mis having a linux box. I do not want to do time shifting. I amd just looking for PVR style recording. I plan on using Freevo If I can get the TV out to work.
The problem is I do not have a monitor for that machine I just use the TV out. While at the Command prompt I am able to see the output just fine. Of course the Problem is Xfree86.
I can at least get X to start by using a generic VGA driver but I then can not see anything on the screen except a bunch of rolling lines. I'm not sure if this is due to my refresh or just because of the VGA driver. i set vert and Horz Refresh at 60hz .
I've also atempted to install the gatos drivers ( though the gatos website does not have very good documentation ) but I've had no luck when i do that I get a "no screen found" error and it kicks back to the prompt after blacking out the screen for about 1 second.
I really want to get this to work and I'm sure someone out there has managed to get this working.
I am using Gentoo 1.4rc3 with the unstable tree. XFree86 4.3.0. I plan on using Gnome 2.2 as my WM but thats not important at the moment.
I would be thankfull for any help I can get with this. Either by posting here, email, PM or whatever. I need some help here.

There is a X11 driver that works for Xfree 4.2.x and have tv out for the AIW7500 . You can find a binary here : http://fixounet.free.fr/gatos
It works 
But you won't have capture and it is old and probably does not work with Xfree 4.3.0
On the other hand with regular gatos you will have capture and Xfree 4.3.0 but no tv out
If you search the gatos mailing list, someone has posted a patch
to have both on AIW card (a few months ago) but you will have to rebuild the driver for yourself (and stick to xfree 4.2.X) |

For your problem with startx, there is an option
Option "crtscreen"
or something like that to fix the problem |

Well I've installed that Gatos driver from the link above and changed some screen settings. Now when i start X it says Server Caught Sig 4 and shuts down.
Now one thing is im running the command through ssh since I am at work and want to see if I can get it to start. I'll have to wait till i get home to try it for sure
One other thing whats the best way to set my system to only use Xfree 4.2 and nothing higher. that way also everything that depends on X 4.3 will not install
