|
|
Ultra 5, 333Mhz, 512M, 9G, OpenBoot PROM 3.19
I've downloaded the sparc 64 iso image, install-sparc64-universal-2005.0.iso. I boot from the cdrom and get to the boot: prompt, enter gentoo-2.4. It then starts to mount the filesystem and hangs at >> Attempting to mount CD:- /newroot/dev/cdroms/cdrom0
Any ideas?
This is my first foray into Gentoo. I've had Aurora Linux installed on this box before, as well as SunOS.
TIA, |

Upgraded OBP to 3.31
Still same problem. Is there some boot argument needed? |

That usually means read errors, try burning the ISO at a lower speed and/or better media.
As a last resort, try ide=nodma, but it's most likely the first problem since Sun seems to always pick the worst CD readers around.
If you think the drive is bad you can usually just swap it for another one since it's ide (cd-rw drive is fine too). _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

Today downloaded new iso, checksum OK, burned at 2X. Same symptoms. Downloaded Solaris 10, burned all 4 iso's and installed fine. I've got a new 52X cdrom drive in the sparc, to hopefully speed up installs. Original was a 4X, I believe. It was bad when I bought the box.
I'm baffled, I've followed the Gentoo - Sparc directions to the letter, downloaded several iso images, burned them on different machines, same symptoms each time.
System boots fine from cdrom, just won't mount the cd filesystem after I do gentoo-2.4. and it tries to mount the cdrom after starting the device management daemon.
I'm about to give up and go back to Aurora Linux, it installs and runs fine. I'll let the bugs get worked out of the sparc boot process... |

I installed GENTOO on my Ultra 5 using the minimal ISO file & all was well until I tried to boot the machine from its HDD.
I'll check to see which version of OpenBoot I've got when I get back to the office in the morning.
I reset the configurable OpenBoot variables to their defaults (at the ok prompt) before installing Gentoo.
If you use the alternate kernel what happens? gentoo-2.4-smp (?) |

My last days experience:
Burn the iso on my gentoo laptop at the maximum speed available with xcdroast. All well.
Installed the system.
First boot Ok.
Second boot: the system hung up after the memory count
Rebooted with the live CD (2005.0)
Choroot in the system
Gave the /sbin/silo command (after reviewing the conf file)
Reboot.
All OK
Still some stuffs to configure (alsa, gpm, and some other) but I succesfully installed Xorg 6.8.2-r1 and fluxbox.
The Computer is very slow (128 Mb Ram and 256Mb Swap file, root made in ext3) in compiling. If someone has some suggestion I will be very pleased to consider them.
Now, I'm trying to update every package that is in need of being updated.
I'm not posting from the Sun Ultra 5, but if you need some conf file to share, just tell (like make.conf, xorg.conf... and so on)

OK, got it now. Reset OBP to defaults, also booted with ide=nodma. Booted fine then. I'm now compiling kernel.
Wish me luck, I'm still a Linux n00b... |

My version of OpenBoot is 3.25
I'm running a 2.4 kernel
In the kernel config I had to specifically enable the following.
│ │[*] CMD640 chipset bugfix/support │ │
│ │[*] CMD640 enhanced support │ │
I tried the ide=nodma, it made no difference.
Good Luck |
