Hi there,

i had the idea to write an ebuild that includes all the software i need on my basic desktop.

Perhaps gentoo-linux beginners would like to have such an ebuild in the portage, so they must only type "emerge gnome-desktop" and all the recommend software for a featured desktop will be installed too.

This is what i used, its not a good example because im not a experienced ebuild writer and it contains lots of masked stuff, but you can see what i mean:
/usr/local/portage/gnome-base/gnome-desktop/gnome-desktop-2.10.1_pre0.ebuild
Code:
# an example ebuild for building a desktop system based on the new gnome

DESCRIPTION="Meta package for buiilding a fully featured GNOME desktop"
HOMEPAGE="http://www.gnome.org/"

LICENSE="as-is"
SLOT="2.0"
# when unmasking for an arch
# double check none of the deps are still masked !

Not bad, but would it not be better to use gnome-light as a base, so you're not building mozilla-firefox, mozilla, and epiphany?
Whatever other packages are missing between gnome and gnome-light could easily be added to your ebuild if you think it's necessary.
It kind of defeats the purpose of gentoo, where you choose the exact packages you want for our needs, but it'd be useful for those completely new to linux who, after a successful install, is greeted with a bash prompt and is left wondering "Okay. Now what?".

Two other suggestions;
While I prefer mplayer myself, totem is a very nice frontend to xine, especially when using gnome.
Beep-media-player would be a good addition too, as most people who use this will probably be coming from a windoze background, and something like winamp might be welcome.
