At first, I though that this would be a permissions problem, but it's actually not so:
crw-rw---- 1 bill audio 14, 3 Dec 31 1969 dsp
The problem is really that I'm unable to record stuff using mencoder when I'm grabbing video from my tv tuner card. The video works fine, but I get this error when I try to capture video and audio:
error reading audio: Invalid argument
I tried using /dev/adsp, but that doesn't seem to work either--though I'm not quite sure exactly what it does. Anybody have any idea why this might be happening? I've loaded in the alsa-oss compatibility layer, and sound plays just fine.

Hah, I figured out what it was..
If you use the creative dxr3 or hollywood plus with the em8300 drivers, if you don't properly configure it in devfs, then it actually takes over the /dev/dsp device node, and the dxr3 drivers don't support recording. |
