Well I finally got my Gentoo system up. Everything is working ok for now, I just need to work out a few things. I followed the instructions for getting ALSA to work on my soundcard. I got to the last step, where I needed to input "/etc/init.d/alsasound start". I typed that command in and I get
*Initialising ALSA....
*Starting sound driver: snd-emu10k1 /lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/drivers/sound/soundcore.o: unresolved symbol devfs_register_chrdev_Rsmp_c96e5d06
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/drivers/sound/soundcore.o: unresolved symbol devfs_register_chrdev_Rsmp_aad0fa10
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/drivers/sound/soundcore.o: unresolved symbol devfs_register_chrdev_Rsmp_9e4a6292
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/drivers/sound/soundcore.o: insmod lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/drivers/sound/soundcore.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-gentoo-r1/drivers/sound/soundcore.o: insmod snd-emu10k1 failed
I started getting this error after going through the ALSA instructions on the main page, and rebooting my computer. Once I rebooted it couldn't load my modules, so I re-tried the ALSA installation and configuration. Anyone know whats up? My kernel has Sound Card Support compiled as a module, and none of the sound cards below are compiled as modules, or anything else for that matter. |

Try looking at the alsa project page http://www.alsa-project.org/ for your sound card. The gentoo ALSA documentation is not that up to date. I've had better luck with the setup info at the alsa homepage. |

You need to enable sound support in your kernel, but thats it - no other card or support is required. soundcore.o is the kernel space support for core sound. Enable it. _________________ Someone told me that "..they only ever made one mistake...."

Is your /usr/src/linux directory linked to the kernel you are loading with grub, lilo?
had this happen before. |
