I updated to the latest Gentoo kernel (gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r9) this morning and nvidia-glx (nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-r4) stopped working. Everything was fine with gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r8. Commenting it out in my xorg.conf file allows X to run again. |

Code: | emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia |
After every kernel rebuild - as the Desktop Guide clearly says... _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I always update the nvidia files after I update the kernel. That's why I posted that it no longer works. |

I have the same problem but I'm still running: 2.6.11-gentoo-r8.
These are the packages I have:
- gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r8
- xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1
- nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4
- nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6
(First I thought it was caused by the prelinking I had done just before I got the error. So I undid the prelinking (prelink --all --undo). But the error remains )
my xorg.conf (with: Load "glx")
my Xorg.0.log (the error is at the bottom, after intializing GLX) Code: | ...
(II) Initializing extension GLX
*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.
Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting |

I've struck the same problem with 2.6.11-gentoo-r8 after upgrading about four packages today (including rc-scripts, which seemed the most likely suspect). Upgrading to gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r9 didn't help, neither did rebuilding nvidia-kernel, nvidia-glx and xorg-x11. I don't think the /etc/init.d/xdm script is to blame - trying to start X manually using "startx" generates the same error.
I've got through /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log, but haven't found any errors reported other than the "Caught signal 11" abort.
I'm stumped...

Try upgrading to 7167 at least - they are stable for me.

No it's not - that is not the error, it's a segfault.
There was no error reported for what caused the segfault.
This indicates incompatibilities between the X server and the GLX driver.
Try what I suggested above. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Sorry for the omission. I run the box as ~x86 and do a sync and emerge -uDav world nearly every morning.
My hardware is:
Athlon 2400XP
Nvidia FX5200 8X AGP video card w/128MB ram
Soyo SY-KT600 Dragon Plus mmoterboard
1GB DDR266 ram
I'm running the following software versions:
gentoo-sources-2.6.11-r9
nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174
nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-r4
The reported Xorg.0.log error is:
(II) Initializing extension GLX

Fatal server error:

Agpgart or nvidia-agp ?
Does X come up normally when you use the nv driver ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

I'm running NvAGP. The nv driver loads OK with Load GLX but not nvidia. I have to comment out the Load GLX line. I didn't make any changes to the kernel config file either. I just ran the make oldconfig progam followed by make modules modules_install install and the reboot. |

Hi,
Might be worth trying kernel agpgart since the NvAGP driver hasn't exactly been the most reliable thing in the world in the past (I never use it myself). Something might have changed in the kernel that the NvAGP driver doesn't like.
Cheers,
James |

Same issue here with:
2.6.11-gentoo-r9
nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174
nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-r4
xorg-6.8.2-r1 _________________ Rich |

I'm just wondering, what baselayout are you all using? I'm running the ~x86 masked baselayout-1.11.12. |

I just dropped baselayout back from 1.11.12 to 1.11.11 and it's working now, after a restart. _________________ Rich |

Thanks Guys. I tried the apgart/NvAGP route and changing kernels but changing baselayout back to 1.11.11 fixed the problem for me too. The Gentoo group rocks!!! |

The bugreport recommends to "mount /dev -o remount, exec" as root before starting X. Doing that worked for me -- and hopefully baselayout-1.1.12 will be fixed soon. |
