so ive been messing with mplayer lately trying to get it to playback the cable signal from my TV card.

I can get it to playback fine, but its only full screen. Unfortunately im not at home right now so i forget the exact commands im passing mplayer at the start. I just thinks its wierd that it wont play in a window like zapping does.

playing tv, mplayer should behave like playing any ordinary file. that is, there is a config-file (/etc/mplayer.conf), where fullscreen switching is enabled by default...
if that doesn't work, try the -nofs switch, which ought to do the very same thing

looks like...
Quote:
from section VIDEO OUTPUT OPTIONS (MPLAYER ONLY):
-fs
Fullscreen playing (centers movie, and makes black bands around it). Toggle it with the 'f' key (not all video outputs support it). See also -zoom.
and from GENERAL NOTES:
Every 'flag' option has a 'noflag' counterpart, e.g. the opposite of the -fs option is -nofs.

but actually it would be easiest to try hitting the f key during playback to try if it works

are the artifacts really outside the window, or just outside the picture (but inside the window)?
in the latter case you can use the crop filter to remove those nasty artifacts.
that's the command line i use for instance...
Code:
mplayer -tv on:driver=v4l:device=/dev/v4l/video0:width=640:height=480 -fps 24 -vop pp=lb,crop=640:460:0:10

where the part
Code:
-vop crop=640:460:0:10
handles the cropping

it kinda looks outside the window. there are blue distorted lines and there is also a solid blue bar that looks like the blank frame buffer window.

the whole picture is somewhat offset and distorted.
