ok, i have a clean Gentoo install completed, now i want to get my sound blaster live card to work properly. what exactly has to be done? i compiled the emu10k1 module into the kernel. when i load kde i get an error saying dev/dsp doent exist. that are the steps to get it working.

thanx

you *copied* the emu10k1 into the kernel? You mean you executed this:

Code:

modprobe emu10k1

If you've done that, and you are using devfs(default in Gentoo), /dev/dsp should exist... Unless modprobe emu10k1 returns errors ofcourse.

Sound is a fairly confusing topic. If you haven't done an intensive search, it might be worth while.

Moved from Installing Gentoo.

Yeah hm... a bit confusing indeed.
dmesg should give you the information needed. Do you have an error message or anything at all about your card?

It seems the emu10k1 kernel module isn't that good. That's why there is a seperate emu10k1 ebuild. Do an emerge emu10k1 and rebuild the kernel according to the directions given at the end of that. Works fine here :)

ok, i removed it from being built-in and selected module instead, i rebooted and did a 'modprobe emu10k1'

/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/ 2.4.20/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1/emu10k1.o failed

I'm using ALSA with my live and everything works fine. It's a little bit larger compile but worth the effort I think.

Have you checked to make sure that you have all necessary pci related options installed into your kernel? (Assuming your SBLive is pci, are there any ISA's or others?)
