Sorry, it's a little off-topic.
I'm going to get a simple MIDI controller keyboard so I can record tunes in trackers and whatnot, but I'm worried about how I'm going to connect the keyboard to my laptop. I have USB/serial/parallel ports -- do I get some cable with an adapter or what? Thanks much in advance. |

Sorry about this being a little late in coming, but there is a converter that has two MIDI plugs on one end and a parallel port plug on the other. I think that this is what you'd need, but how to get it working in Linux is beyond me. I've only ever used such a device under Winblows. _________________ Athlon64 3200

Three other options:
1) Get a keyboard with an 8 pin mini-DIN serial 'to host' connector, then compile ALSA with the snd_serial driver and link them with an ordinary null modem cable.
2) Buy a serial to MIDI adaptor, or make your own.
3) Buy a USB MIDI adaptor. |

USB MIDI adapters actually exist? This would be a great help to me, since I use Gentoo on a "Legacy-Free" laptop without a parallel, serial, or PS/2 port. Can you tell us where to find one? _________________ Athlon64 3200

I always assumed that USB MIDI adaptors exist, just like I've always assumed that the Sydney Opera House exists, even though I've never seen it in person
Try a Google search. I'm pretty sure they are readily available. |
