I have been following the instructions on configuring sound at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/desktop.html

Though I can't seem to get sound going. I have emerged 'media-sound/alsa-driver', done 'depmod -a'. I have put 'snd-pcm-oss' and 'snd-emu10k1' (I also have SB Live 5.1!) into /etc/modules.autoload

I added the aliases "alias snd-card-o snd-emu10k1" and so-forth into /etc/modules.d/aliases and then ran 'update-modules' after it. I then assured the permissions were set correctly in /etc/devfsd.conf

I am positive I compiled Sb Live! support into the kernel and it can be seen at /lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1

When rebooting I get:
Quote:
Loading modules snd-emu10k1
Failed to load snd-emu10k1

Also, if I 'modprobe snd-emu10k1' from a konsole I get.
Quote:
/lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.19-r1/kernel/sound/pci/emu10k1/snd-emu10k1.o: insmod snd-emu10k1 failed

If you're going to use alsa, /ONLY/ compile sound support into the kernel. Don't compile support for a specific card.

Is there an option besides recompiling if you did enable support for specific card?

Seems like there should be :)
