I'm the process of converting a old Sun Ultra 1 into a Gentoo box. I'm doing it as we speak
with the 64 bit version. I'm doing a stage 1 build now here's the system specs:

143 MHz Sparc CPU
standand svga graphics card
5 port 10/100 ethernet card
384 MB ram
2 9GB SCSI drive
1 SCSI CD-Rom

I have a few questions ... should I be doing the 64 or 32 bit version?

Am I wasting my time on this old hardware?

I'm only using this system for maybe web surfing and email ... I plan on putting xorg with
XFCE4 . It depends on how it works after all the stuff is loaded ....

Any information on how I can get it running like a swiss watch  would be helpful ...

The ultra 1 should have an ultrasparc cpu I believe, hence the 64 bit -mcpu=ultrasparc should be used in make.conf. A 2005.0 install I did in the last week on a Netra t 1120 set this up for me, but check to see your make.conf is defaulting to something sensible.

Also set 'ultra1' as a USE flag, this will be picked up by the kernel ( development-sources / gentoo-dev-sources / gentoo-sources / sparc-sources, of which I recommend using sparc-sources ) and I believe will implement some fix thats particular to a hardware quirk found only in the ultra1. Also remember that sparc-sources is 2.4.x, so I hope you recall the settings you used to need for 2.4'isms, like devfsd, etc.

I had to comment out a bunch of login sessions spawned via /etc/inittab that produced a lot of console and /var/log/messages entries like

Code:
agetty[1234]: /dev/tty3: No such file or directory
agetty[1232]: /dev/tty1: No such file or directory
agetty[1235]: /dev/tty4: No such file or directory

Maybe there is a better way to do this, but this did the trick.

The system is running well now, a dual 440MHz US-II with 2 GB of ram is still IMHO a formidable box, even if its running a 2.4.x kernel. I wasnt planning on testing a 2.6.x install as I was doing the install remotely and could not be there to troubleshoot if things went horribly awry, but you might be more adventurous ;)
