[HOWTO] Online Poker

  • Quote

Post by lenk » Sat Apr 23, 2005 12:16 am

I want to compile a list of online poker programs that will work with wine on linux. I have tried 3 different poker programs so far. Currently I only got one of them to run on wine. I have wine installed as such: app-emulation/wine-20050419 +X +alsa -arts +cups -debug -doc +gif -glut -jack +jpeg -lcms +nas +ncurses +opengl +oss

To install wine just

Code: Select all

emerge wine
Here is the list of poker programs I tried:

1) Ladbrokes Poker (http://www.ladbrokespoker.com/) Works perfectly with wine20050419

2) Pacific Poker (http://www.pacificpoker.com/) Program installs but does not run

3) Party Poker (http://www.partypoker.com/) Installation hangs

4) Poker Room (http://www.pokerroom.com/) Java based, works on all web browser that supports java vm

1) Ladbrokes Poker Installation (works)

Download the installation file from their website.

Code: Select all

wine LadbrokesPokerSetup.exe
Follow installation instructions and you are done.
Wine creates a KDE menu for me with Ladbrokes exe and the uninstaller, it comes with logos too :)
or you can run it manually by

Code: Select all

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/ladbrokesMPP/MPPoker.exe
ps: Ladbrokes poker uses Microgaming software, so any casino that uses the same software should work in theory.

2) Pacific Poker Installation (broken)

Download the installation file from their website.
If you run the installation file, it will install and then at the end of installation will complain about not having mozilla activex plugin installed and ask whether you want to install it. I tried clicking yes and it bails out on me.
I found the solution in the WoW thread, darckness teaches us how to install mozilla activex plugin on wine. Thanks!

First step:
copy these two files from your windows installation, I found these files under c:\windows\system32\. I got a WinXP SP2.

Code: Select all

msvcp60.dll mfc42.dll
copy them to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system

Next step:
Download a WINDOWS version of mozilla from mozilla.org. Yes, you read correctly. I recommend the net installer so that you can choose to only install the browser component.
Install mozilla with wine.
Once it's done (you shouldn't have any problems), go download the mozilla ActiveX control http://www.iol.ie/~locka/mozilla/MozillaControl177.exe. Install this with wine. Again, you shouldn't have any problems if you've got the dlls from above.

Third step:

Code: Select all

 wine pacificpoker.exe
I got stuck after this stage, the program installs fine but when I run the program it just hangs. I had to kill -9 the wine process.

I've tried using codeweaver's crossover-office-pro-4.2, the installation goes well, but hangs when I try to run the program.
I didn't bother trying this with cedega 4.3.1 since crossover office didn't work.
vmware 5 works flawlessly

3) Party Poker (installation broken)

Installation hangs.

I'll try other online poker programs and let you all know how it goes. If anyone got any online poker program running not listed here, please post and I'll add to the database. At the mean time, I'll pop over to my mates place to have a real life poker session. Cheers

I've been playing PP for a while, but I haven't had a chance to try it in Linux yet. Have you tried copying over some already installed version from Windows and attempting to execute it with wine?

EDIT

I installed Wine (not winex), and copied over a Win32 installation. It runs, but the window is too small (cannot resize), and I can't seem to join a game (although I can join a table). So I guess it doesn't work :( Maybe someone can find out if it works with Cedega?

Here's an image of what it looks like for me: http://img233.echo.cx/img233/8681/pp0iq.jpg
Notice the "sit down" buttons are missing on the empty seats, backgrounds for the name boxes aren't filled in, there's no graphic for the pot in the middle, the window is too small, and several other minor misrenderings exist :((

I've successfully installed expekt.com's poker client. They are also using Microgaming's software. But when I log in it crashes with no further info. Any clues?
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.

Any luck with poker Champs www.pokerchamps.com

It has free roll tournaments where you can win real money, sure its only $5, or $3 or $1 but its a start and that can be quickly turned into a decent amount.

The client from tigergaming.net works fine for me with Codeweaver Office, so I would assume regular wine will probably work also.
