hi,
After compiling a kernel (2.4.28) with HAL2 support on my Indy r5k and emerging mpg123 I am able to play mp3's, but I can only use the internal speaker.
How can I enable/use the line-out (and the line-in) on my machine?
I must have missed something, but i cannot for the life of me figure out what. Before posting this I did an extensive Googling/ forum search but i couldn't find anything helpful...
PS: Also, when I "emerge alsa-driver", during the pre-compile check it says: "checking for SGI/MIPS (HAL2) architecture... "no"", is that a good thing? |

To plug in external speakers... you don't need to do anything special -- just plug them in, and away you go. I've got my stereo plugged into the outermost socket (closest to edge) on my Indy, and can happily play MP3s on it via xmms. (I've found mpg123 is on the scratchy side with VBR MP3s)
On the alsa-driver issue... ALSA is next to useless on MIPS at the moment, so you're better off using the OSS driver. _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)

One of the Indy's line-outs is a SPDIF digital connection. Make sure you're not using that one. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

Ah, ok thanks....
Although the headplhone out is working (I must have done something wrong the other day)...
When I use mpg123 and the standard HAL2 kernel driver there is a lot of static in the headphone output. I thought that the un-amp'd line-out must be way better, or at least as good as the line-out on the crappy onboard audio of my main PC.
So, my question will be a two-parter... 1; is the line-out of the Indy any good? 2; is it supported in Gentoo?
Enlighten me, please ;) |

I haven't the feintest idea. However, I know for a fact there's nothing wrong with the headphone jack, as I use this myself.
Have you tried an alternate player such as XMMS? I've found mpg123 to be rather scratchy at times. (which is odd, because XMMS uses libmpg123 anyway) _________________ Stuart Longland (a.k.a Redhatter, VK4MSL)

errrrm.. shame on me.
It seems I had a wrong-audio-cable-error in my setup. The line-out is working fine, albeit a bit on the staticy(?) side, but I hope that will be resolved with another mp3 player in stead of mpg123...
Thanks anyway for you guys' quick responses, it did help me to rethink the process and actually check wether the cables were plugged in correctly...
I'll be back with aonther stupid question soon ;) |
