I have an avi on my hd that's a bit too big for a cd (overburn doesn't work).
But I have to move it to cd, so I thought I could reencode the video with a bit more compression. Quality is not too important.
On a windows box I would use virtualdub. Is there any Linux equivalent which eases the process of reencoding a big video file?
Transcode seems a bit complicated (or am I wrong here?).

You could try avidemux.
It's in portage and the newest version is bug #16909.

Have you tried avisplit? It's comes with transcsode and needs only two parameters :D
If you simply want a backup, you also can use binary split and put the results on several CDs. But you have to cat them together before viewing.

Thanks for the replies.
I'll try avidemux, because splitting the video would be a bit of an overkill. It's just about 10 megs bigger than one CD .

Use transcode.

The easiest thing to do, if it is only 10 megs difference, is to re-encode the audio: e.g. if currently 128kbps mp3, recode to 96.

It's all in the transcode example documentation.

Don't waste your time with avidemux! It's not remotely suitable for this.

I personally use mencoder at the moment. I need to reencode mpeg for use as (s)vcd. Works great and can convert nearly any format...
