I just upgraded to XFree 4.3.0, updated all the config files and restarted X. kde starts as normal but all fonts are so small, that they are shown as a line or it's even impossible to seem them. That means, I have no chance to change anything in the kontrolcenter (do you now how big the windows are if there are no fonts to specify the size.....)

Can anybody tell me how to get my fonts back in kde 3.1 ?

BTW: Mozilla works fine. The fonts aren't anti-aliased but at least they are visible. An other odd thing: I thought the mouse cursor will change. I still have the old black one.
X --version gives me 4.3.0

I think I have the same problem, some fonts aren't rendering correct, e.g. helvetica or times. They have no antialiasing. In 4.2.1 everything was ok with this fonts. Anybody an idead about that?

(You have to change your mousecursor in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme)

Hi,
I found out, that everything works, if I choose a color depth of 8 in my XF86Config. Of course the fonts aren't antialiased but they are there. As soon as I return to a Depth of 24 the fonts are gone away.

Anybody know what this could be?

Please give us more information about your specific setup ie-video card, etc.

I have Xfree 4.3.0 and KDE 3.1 on my computer and I dont have any font problems. (Nvidia vidcard).

Any clues in XFree86.log ? If Moz works and K* apps don't, sounds like it might be a DPI problem.

Nothing to see in Xfree86.log :(
Mozilla renders fonts correctly, only KDE seems to have problems with eg Helvetica and Times which are only displayed as little boxes. Quite annoying as Helvetica is default for editors...

I did not have this problem with xfree 4.3 and kde 3.1. I have an up to date system, but I mistyped an emerge and it downgraded my fontconfig from 2.1-r1 to 2.1, then the problem appeared. Not only was I getting boxes instead of helvetica, I couldn't even run mozilla unless I deleted my entire .mozilla directory. I re-emerge fontconfig "ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge fontconfig" and then restarted X and everything is back to fine.

I just emerged Xfree86 4.3 and have the same problems as you guys. I have tried to reemerge xft, freetype, and fontconfig, to no avail. Anybody found a solution to this problem?

Well There is usually a reason ebuilds are masked.. and Xfree 4.3.0 definitely still is...

I for one am going to wait until its unmasked... It will probably be stable then...

:D An re-emerge of qt, or actually an upgrade from qt 3.1.0-r1 to 3.1.0-r3, fixed my problems :)

Ok, here's my experience. I use ARCH=~x86 and have only today managed to check out
how my machine (@home) is doing after an update to X 4.3. I have absolutely no problems
with fonts, or stability (use NVidia drivers) and my machine shows no updates to fontconfig
or freetype. I use kde cvs and the qt and kdelibs/kdebase builds are a few days old (couple of
weeks maybe). So I think if you _don't_ want font problems, go get ARCH=~x86

Regards,
Appu

After merging XFree86 4.3.0, Type1 fonts like Times and Helvetica are not anti-aliased. I'm not certain how this works, my impression was that these fonts were aliased to TT fonts Times New Roman and Arial (usually). This worked with the latest stable XFree86, but is not working with XFree86 4.3.0.

I've re-merged all the usual suspect packages to no avail.

With the exception of this minor aesthetic flaw, XFree86 4.3.0 is great, and seems much more stable on my nvidia TNT (using nvidia-kernel 1.0.4191-r1).
I even like the redglass cursor theme, although I'd prefer green. :)

PostPosted: Fri Mar 07, 2003 6:05 pm    Post subject: Solution to XFree86 4.3.0 ugly Times, Helvetica, etc. fonts Reply with quote

The advice listed in this node fixed the problem for me:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=35332&highlight=helvetica

It was bitmapped fonts, not Type1 fonts that were the problem. fontconfig recursively searches the directories defined in the /etc/fonts/fonts.conf <dir> element and processes all the fonts it finds. Pruning the directory specifications to include only the desired fonts' directories seems to be the answer.

Hmm, seem to be different problems in here...
Mine is: Helvetica, Times and others are NOT THERE, there are boxes instead of characters...
I'll post the solution here, once i got it
